Spotlight; 'When I was looking for a pied-à-terre for work in 2011 as a non-Amsterdammer, on the recommendation of a friend in the 1017 postcode area, Prinsengracht 858c was the first apartment I visited. In 2017, a new phase began: a private owner decided to restore the property and reuse it as a residence, with a focus on Sustainability and the preservation of historical elements. In the heart of a closed residential block in De Baarsjes, Amsterdam, stands a monument dating from 1926: a former KPN telephone exchange, now transformed into a residential building with inner gardens. Studio Piet Boon designed the interior for 18 residences one apartment.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the village flourished as a trading center thanks to grain imports from the Baltic Sea region, herring fishing, and whaling. The wooden house at Number is a national monument dating from 1880, situated on a spacious and green plot of 360 m², bordering the water of De Dee. Be inspired by this old Dutch atmosphere.

A source of inspiration in Bergen Noord Holland

Spotlight: Just outside Amsterdam, when the wind blows strongly from the north, stands this farmhouse in Bergen (NH) that was inhabited by the painter Jaap Min. It also served as his studio. The plot offers views of the farmlands and, in the distance, the dunes that inspired the painter to capture the most beautiful landscapes on canvas. Based on that romanticism and experience, the farmhouse has been modernized into a residential farmhouse with a Burgundian character. Be inspired!

An industrial loft in a hidden location

Spotlight: This industrial loft was created in a former sheet metal workshop and car repair shop at the rear of a historic canal-side building. The building had been unused for years until interior designer Michiel van Fastenhout converted it into apartments and an industrial loft. Spotlight: 't Looiers Huys. A refined family home dating from 1736 in one of the nicest neighborhoods in the heart of the city. A piece of Amsterdam that exudes the atmosphere of a cozy village. The renovation was carried out in collaboration with, among others, architect Quinten de Meyere, who specializes in monuments. After city expansions, the old defensive canals came to lie within the city walls and lost their function. But they were given a role in the Location would ultimately make the city wealthy: transport of merchant goods. Allard Architecture was responsible for the restoration and renovation, and Anne Claus was responsible for the interior. Originally, these imposing buildings served as a primary school and a technical school for the clothing industry, respectively. Twenty-five apartments have been created in this building, including this luxurious 209 m² loft that combines elegance with comfort. In Elias

Spotlight: 'In Elias', a monument dating from around 1645 in the city center of Amsterdam. The building served as a bakery until 1880. The facade is built in Renaissance style with a stepped gable, masonry and arches, and sturdy wooden window frames with glazing bars. The restoration in 2008 restored the building to its original grandeur. Much has been preserved inside, including beautiful paneling, wainscoting, and the exposed construction.

History

Between 1919 and 1929, this building on Muidergracht was home to the chocolate and confectionery factory of Hendrik de Vries 'en Zonen'. The De Vries family came from Friesland at the end of the nineteenth century. They had little money and earned some extra income by making sweets from sugar and chocolate in their kitchen. And so the first chocolate sprinkles were created in this building: the start of the Venz brand. In 1929, the building became too small and the family moved. Later, a Reformed church and a photo studio, among other things, moved into this building.

Neighborhood guide

There are many restaurants, cafés, and shops in the area, and you will find plenty of green spaces. You can walk to Artis Zoo, De Hortus Botanical Gardens, or Wertheim Park. For culture, visit the Kriterion Cinema or the Tropenmuseum. Just outside the Plantagebuurt neighborhood, there is also plenty to do. Cycle to Utrechtsestraat in the city center, or in the other direction towards Amsterdam East. Once you pass through Oosterpark, you will arrive at the bustling Beukenplein with its many restaurants and cafés.

Artis

Artis is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, founded in 1838 with the aim of bringing nature closer to people. It started small as a garden with a pond and a winter garden, and over the years more and more buildings, animals and trees were added. Today, there are more than 900 different animal species to admire, including some special species such as the algazelles, the white-tailed gnus and the margay. You can easily spend a whole day in Artis. Imagine yourself in a tropical climate, admire special fish species and laugh at the monkeys on the monkey rock.

Kriterion Movie Theater

Filmtheater Kriterion is one of the first projects of Stichting Kriterion and has been run entirely by students since 1945. You will find the film theater next to the Roetserseiland campus complex of the University of Amsterdam. Kriterion's weekly program consists of a wide range of films; you can visit Kriterion for arthouse films, documentaries, and international screenings. In the Kriterion café, you can enjoy a drink together before or after the film. We highly recommend the Sneak Preview, which Kriterion was the first to introduce in the Netherlands. Every Tuesday at 7:45 p.m., Kriterion surprises you with the latest films. A ticket for the Sneak Preview costs only 5 euros.

World Museum

The Tropenmuseum is a museum about world cultures and tells the stories of the colonial history of the Netherlands. The museum is located in a monumental building from 1926 on the edge of the Oosterpark. Inside, this museum has a large permanent collection, but it also regularly offers new and current exhibitions. The human story is central to this museum; despite the enormous diversity of world cultures, visitors can empathize with each of the stories on display in this museum. The Tropenmuseum is also highly recommended for a museum visit with children. Learning about the inspiring stories and exotic objects is an intriguing experience for visitors of all ages.

Hortus Botanicus

The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. The Oranjerie, the associated grand café, is also an centuries-old monument where you can relax – even in the middle of winter. They have an extensive lunch menu, and you eat while sitting in the middle of the beautiful tropical gardens. In the summer, the terrace is of course also open. Five Ways Coffee Roasters started as a modest coffee roastery in Amsterdam at Spot On Coffeeroaster. When Ho and her boyfriend came to the Netherlands, they were disappointed by the sushi. The sushi at Hotel Okura was tasty, but also very expensive. The Bab

This restaurant is (unsurprisingly) located on the Entrepotdok. One of the most beautiful parts of Amsterdam, with stunning canals that are virtually untouched by tourists. The restaurant is located in one of the old warehouses and much of the food on the menu is prepared over an open fire. The wine list is also excellent and the restaurant is spacious and very cozy. Good service and delicious food and drinks.

During the day, it's an excellent coffee bar with homemade pastries and sandwiches. In the evening, it transforms into a wine bar and restaurant. The kitchen describes itself as Nordic with pan-European flavors. The dishes (to share) are special. Sourdough bread with whipped comté butter combined with your choice of chicken liver mousse or anchovies in charcoal oil. A potato mousse with chanterelles and egg yolk. The menu is compact but varied. They have a huge (natural and classic) wine selection. The list, compiled by owner Daniel Schein, is in the Star Wine list. The current chef, Ciaran Naughter, has a passion for cooking over fire.

Roopram Roti

Roopram Roti originated in Suriname and was exported to the Netherlands due to high demand for roti on the Dutch market, partly from holidaymakers from Paramaribo. To meet this demand, J. Roopram decided to export frozen roti to the Netherlands. Unfortunately, this was stopped at the last minute due to restrictions on the export of chicken and chicken parts from Suriname. In Location J. Roopram opened his first restaurant at Mathenesserplein 89 in Rotterdam in July 2002. This was followed by a second branch in Amsterdam, called Roopram Roti Eetcafé. Frank's Smokehouse

Frank's smokehouse has been located in Amsterdam for more than twenty years, still in the same place where the first real store was opened on the Wittenburgergracht. As early as 1984, Frank learned to smoke trout in Sweden and was thus captivated by the simple primal form of preservation. When he continued this in his Rear garden in Amsterdam, friends first became his customers and grew into an established smokehouse. If you walk past it, you can already smell the scent of artisanal smoked fish and meat outside.

The Baker's Sons

In 2020, Sold Lokatie Sold no less than 858,000 kilograms of goods from its three Amsterdam thrift stores on Buikslotermeerplein, Distelweg, and Eerste Oosterparkstraat. Everything is second-hand, making it incredibly sustainable. The Lokatie on Distelweg covers no less than 2,000 square meters, making it one of the largest in Amsterdam.
