How resident Aege, in collaboration with architect Quinten de Meyere, who specializes in monuments, created a tasteful and characteristic monumental home with an eye for detail and history. "We feel privileged to have been part of the long history of this monument, built in 1736. Our family is just a passing visitor to this house and its history. We feel responsible for maintaining it or, better yet, passing it on to the next residents in better condition. We have enjoyed preparing the house for contemporary expectations. It is located in a neighborhood of Amsterdam that is special to us, in a quiet street in the center. Within walking or cycling distance of everything that makes our daily lives pleasant and easy."
This national monument, built in 1735, is a building with a characteristic neck gable. At that time, many architects were inspired by the forms of classical antiquity and adapted them to Dutch tastes and the available building materials, with a sense of simplicity. In 2020, this house underwent extensive renovation, both inside and out, under the direction of the current owner, assisted by monument architect Quinten de Meyere. The past was thoroughly studied, while attention was also paid to modern functionality. For example, walls were removed to create a more open character, three bedrooms two Bathrooms were Bathrooms , and close attention was paid to details such as the choice of fixtures, the optimization of the sliding windows (made to be easy to use and draft-proof), the color palette on the walls, and the addition of stoves for extra warmth and atmosphere. The result is a high-quality restoration that has led to a refined and tasteful living environment.
Family life revolves around the small dining table in the kitchen, with the wood-burning stove lit in the fall and winter. We have enjoyed weekly gatherings with family and friends at the dining table. Our youngest enjoys playing with her friends on the mezzanine, which we have converted into her playroom, and on the swing in the garden.
Our youngest attends the ASVO elementary school, which is within walking distance. The Kleine Reus is across from our house. The North-South metro line is on the corner of the street, providing quick and easy access to Central Station and Schiphol Airport. We walk to the Albert Cuyp market several times a week to do our shopping. The car is parked in the parking garage above the metro station on Vijzelgracht, an 80-meter walk away. Utrechtsestraat is an eight-minute walk away, via Amstelveld, where the children play outside."

We use the barbecue in the garden to cook all year round. We have breakfast, lunch, drinks, and dinner outside in the spring and summer. The garden is enclosed and sheltered, which makes it very cozy. The morning sun shines on the bench by the kitchen sink, and the afternoon sun shines on the bench by the garden door. During the day, the living room is a quiet place to read; after dinner in the fall and winter, we light the wood-burning stove, which instantly creates a cozy atmosphere. Before bedtime, we read to our youngest daughter in the big white chair in her bedroom."

The neighborhood guide
The Weteringbuurt, with its small houses and residents who know each other well, is like a village within the city. Spiegelstraat runs through the Weteringbuurt, lined with antique shops, many stores selling non-daily goods, and galleries. The name is reminiscent of the Wetering, which originally flowed from outside into the Spui. The Boerenwetering is a remnant of this. De Schans used to be the rampart on the inside of the city wall. National Museum
The architect, Pierre Cuypers, had made a design in historical style for the Rijksmuseum, a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance and full of national symbolism. After years of hassle - many thought it was too medieval, too Catholic and not really Dutch enough - construction started in 1876. It was officially opened in 1885. In addition to the existing collection, almost all older paintings from the City of Amsterdam were hung in the Rijksmuseum, such as Rembrandt's Jewish Bride, which the banker A. van der Hoop had bequeathed to the city. The Predetarian
The Predetariër was founded by Kaj de Jager, James Snoerwang, and Philip Buys, three friends who quit their office jobs after growing increasingly disillusioned with the bio-industry. Based on their shared love of nature and hunting, they developed the idea of predetarian food: mainly plant-based, with the occasional responsible wild meat. Through their webshop, they sell game that is shot for nature conservation in the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland, and they are now bringing the same principle to their physical store and deli. At For Sale products to take home, but you can also sit down for sandwiches such as venison rendang and goose pastrami, accompanied by sustainable drinks.
