Pontsteiger, eye-catcher on the IJ

144e-001_ferry_landing_a-ossip

History

The (Old) Houthaven was dug in 1876, at the same time as the construction of the North Sea Canal, for the transshipment and storage of timber. It was Amsterdam's first dug harbor. When timber began to be transported increasingly by road, the inlets were filled in after 1945.
The Pontsteiger building is part of the Houthavens area development. The residential complex is located on the IJ, where the ferry to the NDSM site and the Distelweg departs from the ferry pier built in 1957 near Tasmanstraat.

At the beginning of this century, Amsterdam got serious about its plans for Haveneiland in West. In addition to a new residential area, an iconic building was to be constructed on the IJ. A building with 'high architectural ambition' that would generate 'positive publicity and support' and play 'a role in the entrance to the city'. The selection committee felt that the design concept by the young firm Arons en Gelauff stood out among ten renowned architects. Construction of the 92-meter-high building began in February 2015 and was finally completed in 2019. A striking feature of the building is its finish, which includes bronze-green tiles between the floors. Other eye-catching facade elements are the external and internal (but visible from the outside) V-shaped support beams.
In 2020, the building was one of nine nominees for the Amsterdam Architecture Prize.

“I warm up automatically when I cycle across the Westerdok and see that friendly giant standing in the distance. He has simply come to stand there, with his feet in the IJ, next to the countless new houses that are now being built there.”

Auke Kok, NRC March 22, 2019

Arons and Gelauff:

In the joint design assignment between three architects, we delivered on our promise: an iconic residential building that puts the residents first and creates a place in the large space on the IJ. Our submission added a few more ambitions to the assignment. Pontsteiger is not located on, but in the water, thus establishing optimal contact with the IJ.
The building makes an inviting gesture towards Amsterdam-Noord; the ferry also physically connects the two sides of the water. And thanks to the building's raised chair shape, Pontsteiger not only offers living with a view, but also an inviting public space.
To bring urban life inside, the residential building has been raised seven meters. The courtyard, designed by Hanneke Kijne of MORE, offers a well-proportioned public space on the waterfront. The sightlines under the building remain open from all sides. Beneath the robust main structure are elegant pavilions containing the entrances and a varied urban program. This creates a gentle transition between inside and outside and a human scale at the foot of the high-rise.

The Pontsteiger in Amsterdam is a magnificent building whose unique shape opens the door to more high-rise construction.

The building has a concrete structure with cast-in-place construction in the basements and low-rise sections and uses prefabricated stack construction for the towers. Between the towers, a steel structure has been suspended from a height of 60 meters for the eight residential floors in the bridge.

A special glaze was developed for the facades in collaboration with Koninklijke Tichelaar from Makkum. The building changes color with the weather: light when the clouds are gray, glowing gold during a clear sunset. Closer up, the green copper tones stand out, beautifully complementing the water of the IJ.

Boon & de Koot

Following the success of Zoldering, chef Thomas Bron, wine importer Joost Clarijs, and sommeliers Job Seuren and Wout Jans opened Boon & de Koot, an accessible wine bar in the Zeeheldenbuurt neighborhood, without compromising on quality. The menu starts with hearty snacks such as oeuf mayo with roasted garlic and lovage, cleverly served so you can eat it in one bite. This is followed by refined starters such as raw sea bass with beurre noisette and calamansi or a coarse steak tartare with radicchio and anchovies. The real showstopper is the dish of roasted peas with tomatillo, olive, and egg yolk, a perfect interplay of smoke, freshness, and creaminess. Inside, there is a French bistro atmosphere, while outside, the terrace with marble tables and burgundy chairs invites you to linger for another glass.
