Spotlight: ‘Park View’. ‘Our living room is on the top floor, and every morning when we come upstairs, we feel happy: the light, the view, the freedom!’

Park View

Living next to the park adds an extra dimension of space and greenery. This unique and extra spacious upper floor apartment offers that experience across three full floors. An upper floor apartment with extra light, thanks to its south-facing position, which in our opinion makes the property extra pleasant to live in. This is also what the owners confirmed to us. The view of Sarphatipark is an experience every day. In addition, the size is distinctive for this location, where upper houses are usually smaller. This three-story upper house, with its own entrance and staircase from the street, has retained its character and at the same time surprises with a loft-like living room with a terrace and Roof terrace. We believe that all these qualities together offer a unique opportunity for anyone who wants to live in De Pijp.
With its three floors, the upper house offers a total of approximately 265 m² of living space with plenty of room to live, a total of eight rooms, and an upper floor that is entirely dedicated to living, cooking together, and being outdoors.

Design vision

As part of De Pijp, and in particular the development around Sarphatipark, this building was constructed during the fin de siècle period. A time when neoclassical architecture set the tone, with grandeur and designs that reflected French influences. The facades were designed according to the golden ratio and richly decorated with ornaments. Large windows, bay windows, and balconies give the buildings around the park their elegant appearance. At Sarphatipark, where the city shows its most classic side, a generously proportioned upper floor apartment with character unfolds behind a carefully restored facade. The architecture, detailed with natural stone accents, decorative brickwork, and a stately entrance, bears witness to a time when aesthetics and craftsmanship reinforced each other. Inside, this line is effortlessly continued. High ceilings with original ornaments, a classic fireplace, and richly profiled moldings give the interior a refined look. The height of almost three meters creates a generous sense of space. Historical details, such as the marble fireplace and the window frames, have been preserved and carefully restored. The atmosphere is calm, timeless, and balanced. The layout is logical and well thought out: the bedrooms bathroom are on the second and third floors, while the top floor is designed as a living area with an open-plan kitchen, dining area, and sitting area. On top is a spacious Roof terrace. The levels are connected by an internal staircase that blends naturally into the layout. The combination of classic elements and a modern, functional layout gives this home a characterful yet contemporary feel, a natural match for the location.

What the residents will miss

This is a house that brings happiness. Every morning when we come upstairs, we are delighted by the view. On one side, the tangled branches of the street and the park and the almost tangible change of the seasons; on the other side, the sky and an unobstructed view all the way to the Zuid-as. It is a house in balance. Located in the middle of the bustling Pijp neighborhood and part of the almost village-like community of Sarphatipark, behind the front door it is an oasis of tranquility and almost complete privacy. The high, atmospheric period rooms on the first two floors form an exciting contrast to the loft-like, very wide and high living floor. Through a number of renovations, we have been able to enhance that loft feeling over the years. The sturdy steel, ceiling-high fireplace is one of the interventions that still evokes a wow feeling in that regard.
Another wonderful thing about this house is the many spacious Rooms, whether we use them for sleeping, working, or making music. We have lived here for over twenty years. Our son was born and raised here. And we have never felt the urge to leave. The space inside, the park with a playground on our doorstep, the many amenities—shops, schools, restaurants—the nice neighbors, the good accessibility to the ring road: all these things have made this house a wonderful home for us all these years. We are now entering a different phase of our lives, also as a family. A different house suits that better. But this house by the park will always have a place in our hearts.

The Pipe.

The apartment is located in the Zuid district, in the most sought-after and quietest part of De Pijp. De Pijp was built at the end of the 19th century to provide housing for newcomers who moved to the capital for work. Freddy Heineken's father opened the Heineken brewery here in 1886. The first workers' houses, around Albert Cuypstraat, were built quickly and cheaply. Later, Berlage added houses in the Amsterdam School style towards the Diamantbuurt. It is said that the neighborhood owes its name to the long, straight streets, which are shaped like a pipe.

Neighborhood guide

De Pijp is known for its liveliness and cozy restaurants and cafés, all within walking distance.  The Albert Cuyp Market and Sarphatipark are key to De Pijp's dynamic vibe. Artists and writers like Piet Mondriaan, Carel Willink, and Gerard Reve lived and worked here. The lively, diverse population brought many cafés and eateries to the neighborhood. Today, the neighborhood is known as the Latin Quarter of Amsterdam, with many dynamic restaurants such as Samuel's, Badcuyp, the Italian Impero Romano, and the French Arle of Caron. In addition, there are cozy eateries from all corners of the world in the Van Woustraat.

Epicerie de Pijp

A little bit of France in Amsterdam. Because of the lack of French delicacies, when owner Merabi went to France, she came back with bags full of groceries, this shop was opened around the corner from the Albert Cuyp market.
All products are selected and imported by the owners themselves. Fresh products such as Le Mi-chèvre Soignon, a cheese made from goat and cow's milk, but also galettes Saint Jacques, crêpes filled with scallops in butter-parsley sauce.

Alberto Pozzetto can be found in one of the most vibrant side streets of the Albert Cuyp market in the Pijp district of Amsterdam. At Alberto Pozzetto you can find all your authentic Italian groceries. Coffee, tea, pastries and especially the delicious sandwiches with fresh meats, vegetables and cheeses are highly recommended. The shop is small but nice, but you can also go inside for a delicious meal. Alberto is also recommended for catering. The Albert Cuyp Market

The Albert Cuyp Market is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and, with 260 stalls, is the largest daily market in Europe. In 1905, the Local authority decided to establish a free market that is now the Albert Cuyp Market, named after a 17th-century painter. You can do your daily shopping here and find especially fresh fish, delicacies and various types of fabrics. The market is of course well-known among Amsterdammers, but tourists also know how to find the market to taste typical Dutch delicacies such as herring and stroopwafel and to look for souvenirs. It is also a nice market to just walk through for fun.

The Predetarian

The Predetariër was founded by Kaj de Jager, James Snoerwang, and Philip Buys, three friends who quit their office jobs after growing increasingly disillusioned with the bio-industry. Based on their shared love of nature and hunting, they developed the idea of predetarian food: mainly plant-based, with the occasional responsible wild meat. Through their webshop, they sell game that is shot for nature conservation in the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland, and they are now bringing the same principle to their physical store and deli. At For Sale products to take home, but you can also sit down for sandwiches such as venison rendang and goose pastrami, accompanied by sustainable drinks.

Peppi Deli

Peppi Deli is not a fast food takeaway, but a personal caterer where owners Roel de Niet and Onno Diepenbach themselves work in the kitchen and in the shop. De Niet changed his classic chef training after traveling through Africa and the Middle East, and you can taste those influences in the vegetarian, largely organic menu. The menu changes with the seasons and includes dishes such as celeriac steak with gnocchi, vegetarian moussaka, and focaccia with caramelized onion and smoked labneh. The bread is baked in-house, visible from the shop, which adds to the artisanal character of the place. Peppi Deli is intended as a regular stop for the neighborhood: a quick, good, healthy meal every day, made with care and without haste.

'A celebration of cultural diversity through Japanese traditions, techniques, and love for the ingredient with a respectful disregard for the rules of regular convention.' Pho 91

This small restaurant serves traditional Vietnamese pho (noodle soup). The menu is deliberately small and refined to guarantee the daily quality and freshness of the food. Most dishes are gluten, egg, and dairy-free, and there is an extensive selection of exciting choices for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. If you don't feel like soup, try the beef and noodle salad (Bun bo Xao Sa). In other words, there is something for everyone!

Crema

Crema has become a popular hotspot thanks to its artisanal soft-serve ice cream, made from fresh local milk and cream, without artificial flavors or colors. With real vanilla from Madagascar, quality is paramount here, down to the smallest detail. In addition to ice cream, you can also enjoy specialty coffee and homemade cookies, making it just as good a place for a coffee break as it is for dessert. The menu plays with contrasts, from classic sundaes to the surprising combination of soft serve with premium olive oil and Maldon sea salt.

Roopram Roti

Roopram Roti originated in Suriname and was exported to the Netherlands due to high demand for roti on the Dutch market, partly from holidaymakers from Paramaribo. To meet this demand, J. Roopram decided to export frozen roti to the Netherlands. Unfortunately, this was stopped at the last minute due to restrictions on the export of chicken and chicken parts from Suriname. In Location J. Roopram opened his first restaurant at Mathenesserplein 89 in Rotterdam in July 2002. This was followed by a second branch in Amsterdam, called Roopram Roti Eetcafé. Since then, two additional branches have been opened, one in The Hague and one at Van Woustraat 37 in Amsterdam.
