Heinekens Glazenwasscherij, a loft in the heart of De Pijp
Semi-industrial building
This apartment is located in a semi-industrial building dating from thefin de siècle (the beginning of the 20th century). It was originally built as commercial space for a window cleaning company, and Heineken's cousin had a vision to tackle window cleaning as an industry on a larger scale. In addition, there was a need for space for storage and production of window blinds. The building was constructed in 1920.
The building is located in the middle of typical blocks of residences are characteristic of the Pijp district in Amsterdam. The ground floor usually houses commercial spaces, while the upper floors residences .
The current residents
‘When we first walked into the loft a few years ago, we knew immediately that we had found the home we had been searching for for so long. The house is atmospheric and peaceful. It has that real loft feeling, with single-story living in the middle of the lively Pijp neighborhood. The beautiful old front door, the large high ceilings, the lovely terrace—we still enjoy this wonderful house every day.
The apartment exudes the history of the building. The founder of Heineken's Glazenwasserij was related to the founder of the Heineken Brewery. After that, it has had various uses, such as a sawmill, a ballet school, and an art studio. It remains a remarkable idea that all of this has taken place here.
'What we will miss most is living in this unique single-story apartment, with its high ceilings and open space. It's the perfect place for a cozy get-together, but if you want some peace and quiet, you can also retreat to the oasis of tranquility inside the house. We are project another project and going back to our roots in Rotterdam. But we will never forget this beautiful and special house.'
Neighborhood
The neighborhood is wonderfully lively. The cozy Gerard Douplein with its bars and restaurants, various coffee shops, and the tastiest sandwich shops around the corner. From the house, you can walk straight to Utrechtsestraat, Sarphatipark, and Amstel, or in the other direction to Museumplein & Vondelpark. The proximity to gyms/supermarkets, the Albert Cuyp market, and the accessibility of the A10 ring road make this one of the best places in Amsterdam. See our neighborhood guide below.
