The Mannequin
A search for something unique
It all started with a search for something unique, something that would fulfill all our wishes—a large, single-story space with lots of light and a terrace adjacent to the kitchen. Nina came across this special property online and decided to schedule a viewing. What we ultimately found exceeded all our expectations.
The apartment was located in the iconic old Fashion School, and not just any apartment, but the most beautiful one on the top floor. It was a space with unlimited possibilities, thanks to the shell that had been built by the developer. Here we could make our own mark, bring our own style to life.
What immediately attracted us were the large windows that allowed the northern and southern light to flow in generously. And then there was Roof terrace, Immediately to the kitchen with large sliding doors, allowing the inside and outside to flow seamlessly into each other.
With a lot of love and dedication, we transformed the apartment into a true oasis, with high-quality finishes, unique designer furniture, built-in cupboards, a cozy fireplace, a kitchen we designed ourselves, and even a steel staircase. When we had children, we realized how special it was that everything was on one floor, with an elevator that took us Immediately our covered garage.’
Warmth and connection
What we hadn't anticipated beforehand was the warmth and connection we would experience as part of the homeowners' association with 22 apartments, all of which were involved in the transformation of the old Modeschool. It felt like coming home to a close-knit community, where fun activities were organized throughout the year for young and old alike. Our memories are filled with summer days on the Roof terrace, from quiet mornings with coffee to exuberant BBQs until the wee hours. In winter, we enjoyed cozy evenings by the fireplace.
Our part of Oost still feels authentic and lively to us, with diverse cultures blending harmoniously. With green parks nearby, there is always a place to seek out nature. And the neighborhood offers an abundance of nice cafés, restaurants, and shops, with the Brazilia shopping center as a real gem for the best meat and fish, but especially on Wednesday afternoons with the organic market. Drink coffee at the Jonge Admiraal, have drinks and dinner at French Café and Bar Bachrach, or eat the best falafel at Tigris en Eufraat.
Despite the wonderful time we have had here, we have decided to embark on a new adventure in Italy. It pains us to leave this beautiful place behind, but we hope that the next occupant will enjoy it as much as we have. It is time for a new chapter, but the memories of this special home will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Architecture
In the heart of Zeeburgerdijk lies a unique residential complex, created from the redevelopment of two historic buildings dating from 1914 and 1969. Originally, these imposing buildings served as a primary school and a technical school for the clothing industry, respectively. Today, they have been given a whole new purpose as a modern residential complex with 25 Smartlofts apartments and an indoor parking garage. The residents were closely involved in the design process, working with the architect on their residences as well as on the development of communal areas. The Smartlofts concept embraces collective facilities. From a spacious communal lounge on the ground floor to a guest house, a Roof terrace a courtyard. These shared spaces provide extra living comfort and offer residents flexibility in the use of living space.
The transformation of these former school buildings into a contemporary urban residential block illustrates a new approach to 'urban' living. By breathing new life into historic structures and adapting them to modern living needs and sustainability requirements, a bridge is built between the past and the future. This project the synergy between history, luxury, and Sustainability.
'What immediately attracted us were the large windows that allowed the northern and southern light to flow in generously.'
Outside
The terrace, with a Floor area more than 70 m² and located next to the kitchen and workspace, is a valuable addition. Thanks to the large sliding doors, this terrace can be used early in the spring. Sunlight enters the kitchen from early spring to late fall, quickly inviting you to sit outside.
The neighborhood guide
The Zeeburgerdijk is named after the Seeburg fortress that stood along the dike in the 17th century and was previously called Sint Anthonisdijk. The dike probably dates from the 13th century and is part of the old dike along the Zuiderzee. It connected Amsterdam with Muiden and, before the reclamation of the Watergraafsmeer, was also the only land connection with Naarden. From the 17th to the 19th century, the dike was a popular walking spot for Amsterdam residents. Around Herberg Zeeburg (a building that still stands today) at the head of the Zuiderzee dike, there were several inns. Herberg Zeeburg was also the landing place for sea transport of livestock, which was brought in from places such as Hanover. The area along the dike was developed from the end of the 19th century, when construction began on the Dapperbuurt, the Oostelijk Havengebied, and the Indische Buurt.
