The building
The building was originally constructed in 1614 as a shop house with storage attics. At that time, it also had a stepped gable with semicircular relief arches and window frames with shutters. There was also an outdoor porch leading to the entrance. Around 1770, the building was renovated and given a completely new facade and layout. The crested bell gable, floor layout, low porch, and front door on the right were created at that time.
Between 2016 and 2019, the building underwent a meticulous transformation, led by the renowned design team at The Collective Studio. Thanks to the craftsmanship of both national and international artisans, the building Sustainability quality and Sustainability . During the restructuring, a completely new foundation was laid and all original construction details were restored with great care. This has resulted in the preservation of the classic aesthetics, combined with an inner tranquility that blends seamlessly with the lively urban environment. The result is a unique balance between timeless elegance and a modern lifestyle.
When we first entered this building on Herengracht, we were overcome with emotion.
The interior, inspired by Marrakesh, the layout, and the possibility of having friends stay overnight in the apartment; the atmosphere—we could picture it right away.
'A great place to cook together, have a drink on the bench in front of the door while watching the city go by, or work at the dining table by the fireplace.'
What the owners will miss
Paul and I wanted to combine the tranquility we enjoy in our family home in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen with Amsterdam. When we first entered this building on Herengracht, we were moved. The interior, inspired by Marrakesh, the layout, and the possibility of having friends stay overnight in the apartment; the atmosphere—we immediately envisioned it. A great place to cook together, have a drink on the bench in front of the door while the city passes you by, or work at the dining table by the fireplace. But also ideal for retreating from the hustle and bustle, in the living room on the sofa by the fireplace, or in our bedroom that feels like a hammam. And all this in the heart of Amsterdam. A wonderful place to see our three daughters, who live in Amsterdam, often. The house felt happy. Opposite the Hoxton, with SoHoHouse and the Nine Streets around the corner and the Jordaan a five-minute walk away, it feels like a cozy village in the city. For us as Zeeland-Flemings, that's a big plus. Parking in front of the door or in our parking lot also makes the house easily accessible. We start the day with a walk: first past the kiosk, us for the newspaper, the dogs for a treat. We get croissants at Wolf bakery and coffee at Kaldi (the best!). Despite our good intentions to cook together often, the temptation to eat out is often great. Toscanini is our favorite, closely followed by Parlotte because of its extensive menu with fine wines. The classic Café De Pels is sometimes also a stop during an evening walk. We find beautiful clothes at Velours in Huidenstraat or Extreme Cashmere on Herengracht.
What we will miss most is our lovely neighborhood, combined with the beautiful place to retreat to. The hustle and bustle and the peace and quiet. Our favorite spot is the windowsill, with a book on our lap or an aperitif, enjoying the living painting. But also the newspaper and coffee on our bench in front of the house and the chats with passers-by. Now we want to build a new house with all the inspiration we have gained during our travels. This property has been a great inspiration. This house has been good to us, and we look back on it with great pleasure.
