Famous physicists
When I first entered the former lecture hall of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Amsterdam as an architect some fifteen years ago, I was initially fascinated by the spatial quality and then, of course, by the historical value that, after almost a century and a half, can still be seen in the monumental ceiling with the eighteen names of famous physicists carved in plaster and the plaque of professor and Nobel Prize winner Van der Waals above the entrance doors. Einstein even gave guest lectures there.’
Spatial quality
The challenge was then to meet the requirements of a contemporary home while retaining that spatial quality, without detracting from its rich history. This was achieved by building a mezzanine at half the height of part of the approximately 12 x 12 m and approximately 6.5 m high space, creating a freely configurable living space of approximately 100 square meters. The utility rooms are located underneath. The different levels are connected by stairs. The use of voids and lots of glass preserves the spaciousness.

The property is located directly on the water, so there are no annoying roads nearby, and from the first floor, with the doors open, you can enjoy the sun and the pleasure boats passing by in complete peace and quiet.
The neighborhood guide
The building is located in the very pleasant and green Plantage neighborhood. Around the corner are the J.W. van Overloopplantsoen, the Hortus Botanicus, the Wertheim Park, and Artis Zoo. Plantage Middenlaan has plenty of cafés, and the excellent restaurants De Plantage and Entrepot are nearby. Shops, various museums, the Kriterion cinema, and the city center are within walking distance.
