Living on the Amstel, the best of both worlds
Living in complete freedom
On the banks of the Amstel River, surrounded by nature yet within easy reach of Amsterdam, lies this unique farmhouse—the best of both worlds.
Originally built as a cattle farm, the ensemble consists of a barn and an older winter house. The barn has recently been rebuilt, including new foundations and a basement. Although its original appearance has been preserved, a large facade and skylights reveal that the space has been given a new function. The rear facade is made entirely of steel and glass, allowing the interior and exterior to blend seamlessly.
The winter house, built at an angle with a hipped roof, rests on a raised ground floor. This created space for a cheese cellar and an upstairs room with a view of the river. Large windows, authentic brickwork, and the impressive entrance via the attached summer house give the whole building a sense of grandeur and character.
Five imposing lime trees stand in front of the house. They complete the picture – picturesque, sheltered, and completely at home.
Timeless transformation
Architect Marc Prosman worked closely with the owners to achieve a transformation that leaves the soul of the original house intact. The renovation is an ode to detail, materials, and craftsmanship—with a keen eye for quality.
The balance between old and new has been carefully maintained. The original architectural style and materials have been preserved, while the interior has been given a modern look. Sustainable and insulating measures have been integrated discreetly. Old floors, beams, doors, and brick walls still define the character, but blend effortlessly with new oak columns and beams. These subtly mark the transition to the more austere, spacious Rooms the stable and basement. One of the most charming places: the upstairs room. With a view over the Amstel, where the light from the water gently dances in.
