De Zonnehoek, an architectural country house in the middle of the city
History
Architect F.A. Warners, born in 1888, son of contractor and architect Philip Warners, worked at various architectural firms after completing his studies.
In 1909, he traveled through England, where he was inspired by the characteristic cottages. This was an important starting point for the design of Muzenplein. Together with his fine detailing of the paneling, wooden beams, and steel windows, this inspiration has given the house a lot of atmosphere and character. Warners is known for creating optimal functionality in houses that serve multiple functions beyond just living. With his innovative ideas, he was an influential figure in Dutch architecture in the early 20th century.
The 378 m² family home with wooden details and a classic wood-burning stove was originally built for doctors, with a practice at home.
The current residents
This has always been a special house, ever since we moved here with my parents. The external beauty, the spaciousness of the house, the architectural details, the view. This house was the first house in Amsterdam built for a doctor. There is an area near the entrance where the practice room, the waiting room, and a niche for the secretary are located. For many Amsterdammers, this was a familiar address, and years after the practice closed, I still encountered people who would say, "You know, I used to visit your mother's practice and..." and then they would recount their own adventures in the house. It is a house that attracts friends and guests. There is always activity and conviviality. It is a kind of central point in our lives, but also in the lives of many other people connected to the family.
The character is timeless with architectural style features. The paneling, steel windows, and wooden beams are almost a hundred years old and give the house its authentic look.
Architect F.A. Warners was inspired by both the Amsterdam School and American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
