A design that feels like a tailor-made suit. Living in a house where you feel that everything has been designed to suit your lifestyle. That is what we at Studio Piet Boon want to create. Olivier Brinckman, lead designer | architect at Studio Piet Boon, talks about the interior design of a luxurious apartment in the Pontsteiger building.

“It starts with an interview. As an architect, you need to be well informed about the client's wishes. What helped was that the client had collected pictures himself. In addition, the art collection also Location a Location . What was extra nice was that we were able to do this design for a former classmate!”

A design in which the spaces are as open as possible seemed logical to us.

We already had an idea of what we wanted to do with the Pontsteiger building. The view is expansive and grand, so a design with as few closed spaces as possible seemed logical to us. An important consideration was that everything we added would contrast clearly with the existing structure. The architectural features include light stucco, industrial steel facades, and the construction itself. The added elements are the black slats, the glass facades, luxury materials such as marble, and the color. We kept the floors and ceilings as calm as possible. No baseboards were used to reinforce the minimalist character. All switchgear has been concealed as much as possible. Hidden cabinets have been created throughout. This contrast makes the architectural elements more visible."

The warmth and luxury of a hotel suite

The building's structure runs between the hallway and the entrance. This turned out to be ideal for storing the so-called practical 'back of house' functions, allowing us to leave the space in front of it open. Of course, we wanted to be able to divide this space into practical areas, so we decided to split it into sleeping and living areas. The middle section is flexible. You can use it as a study or lounge, but you can also transform it into a guest bedroom. The space can be easily closed off with the extra sliding walls, and the bed is stored in a wall unit. The curtains are hidden in the wall unit. The glass fronts (which can also be darkened with hidden curtains) give us privacy, but because they're glass, they still let in light and keep the space feeling open.

“We also installed a glass wall in the bathroom, allowing daylight to enter the shower. Here too, we used marble (like an open book, creating mirrored lines), luxurious faucets from Cocoon, and hidden cabinets.
The kitchen is fully equipped, but does not take Location too much Location . Because we were able to place the practical items in the utility room, the kitchen feels spacious."

"We were designing a few hotels during this period, and we incorporated that experience and inspiration into this design.
As a result, the apartment feels spacious and transparent, but also has the warmth and luxury of a hotel suite."

Mangia mangia! Italian food in Amsterdam.

Italians came to the Netherlands centuries ago. They made ice cream, laid Italian granite terrazzo, were chimney sweeps, or worked in the mines in Limburg. These Italian migrant workers helped rebuild the Netherlands after the Second World War and also had a major influence on our food culture. Read here about the best places in Amsterdam to shop for Italian groceries and eat and drink Italian.
