Mangia mangia! Italian food in Amsterdam.

The history of Italians in Amsterdam is rich and varied, with waves of migration dating back to the 17th century. During this period, Italian chimney sweeps arrived in the city, mainly from the Valle Vigezzo in Piedmont, a region known as the 'chimney sweep valley'. These craftsmen initially settled near Schoorsteenvegerssteeg (Chimney Sweep Alley), where they used their expertise in cleaning chimneys to protect Amsterdam's wooden buildings from fire hazards.

In the 19th century, the Italian community in Amsterdam continued to expand. In addition to chimney sweeps, terrazzo workers came to the city, specializing in laying granite floors and other decorative elements. These craftsmen often lived in the Oosterpark neighborhood, where they formed a close-knit community and attended mass together. Despite their visible presence, their numbers were too small to speak of a 'Little Italy'.

The 20th century saw a new wave of Italian immigration, especially after World War II. In the 1950s, Italian guest workers were recruited for jobs in sectors such as mining, shipbuilding, and the textile industry. Many of them settled in Amsterdam, where they contributed to the city's reconstruction and economic growth.

In addition to their professional contributions, Italians also brought cultural influences with them. The Italian community introduced culinary traditions such as ice cream making and opened various eateries, which contributed to the enrichment of Amsterdam's food culture. Furthermore, Italian musicians and artists played a role in the cultural life of the city, particularly in neighborhoods such as the Jordaan.

Over the centuries, Italians have integrated into Amsterdam society while preserving their unique cultural heritage. Their presence has had a lasting impact on the social, economic, and cultural development of the city.

That influence can still be felt today. Second and third generations living in Amsterdam are reshaping Italian food culture—with a keen eye for quality, origin, and simplicity. They run trattorias, import special olive oil from Umbria, serve homemade pasta, and pour wine like you would only find in an osteria in the hills around Bologna.

Zero Zero is a bakery and delicatessen located in Amsterdam and owned by the same owners as Ceppi's. In addition to making pizza, Greco specializes in making sourdough bread. In addition to sandwiches, Zero Zero sells a wide range of Italian delicacies, including wine, bags of pasta, and olive oil. Fresh ingredients for sandwiches are also For Sale. They take what is easy and affordable from Italian cuisine, such as chicken instead of lamb. Casa del gusto

Gianni and Gessica have a clear vision for the future of Casa del Gusto. 'We want to remain a small company that works with small-scale farmers: that is our concept. 'We know all the farmers we work with personally. We buy our Grana Padano – Italy's most popular cheese – from a farmer who only produces two pieces a day. That is almost nothing compared to large industrial producers who deliver hundreds of pieces a day. What we find very important is that you get to know the producers through the taste of our salamis, pastas and beers.' You should be able to taste the love that the farmers have put into it', explains Gessica. From hazelnut paste and gnocchi to bottarga and aloe vera beauty products: the shop is full of delicious delicacies and beautiful products. Casa del Gusto is, as the name suggests, a house of taste for its customers.

Linguini

Simplicity is essential in Italian cuisine: as long as the ingredients are good, you don't need much. “Less is more”. They understand that well at Linguini in the Herenstraat. The interior exudes the Italian dolce vita feeling: attractive old tiles and a beautiful long sofa as an eye-catcher: Linguini is a cozy and warm trattoria, with attention to detail. The menu is small and mainly consists of pasta. You can order this either in a small portion (for one person), or in Italian style in a large pan for the ‘famiglia’. So, pasta, pasta, pasta. All prepared with love and passion by the Italian ‘pasta maestro’ named Lorenzo Isidoro.

Leonardo's Ravioli Bar

After decades in Toscanini's kitchen, where he is still co-owner and chef, Leonardo Pacenti also opened his own ravioli bar. In De Pijp, he created a place that exudes Italian sprezzatura. Bar Buuf was founded by Fleur van Olphen (in collaboration with the owner of Bar Dó), who grew up in Saigon and trained as a chef at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris before opening her own restaurant in Amsterdam. She deliberately chose a name that was homely and accessible, as a counterpart to the many French bistros in the city. The cuisine has a French foundation, with room for influences from other countries thanks to an international team and a menu that changes with the seasons. Fleur likes to be close to her guests and built Bar Buuf as a place where hospitality is a given, from a carafe of water to a basket of bread at no extra charge. Zicami Market

Zicami Market is a bi-monthly Italian market, set up by Camilla, known for her patisserie brand La Torta di Camilla. Out of her love for her roots, she brings together a carefully selected group of Italian food makers in Amsterdam. Visitors stroll past stalls selling cannoli, handmade pasta, artisanal sauces, charcuterie, cheeses, olive oil, and dolci, as if walking through a Sicilian village. The strength of Zicami lies not only in the food, but also in the atmosphere: espresso at small tables, Italian music, and the feeling of a neighborhood market where everyone meets. You can find the market every first and third Saturday of the month at Bosboom Toussaintstraat 70.

The trattoria is the restaurant, the pizzeria offers stone-baked pizzas and takeaway options, and the alimentari is a shop selling Italian products. Here you will find Parmesan, pecorino, sausage, wine, and sandwiches. The pizzeria serves delicious burrata and Neapolitan-style pizza. With an authentic Italian atmosphere and excellent pizza, they make the dough daily using a special fermentation process for lighter and more digestible pizzas.

Pizza Project

It started with a pizza oven in their Rear garden. Every Friday, friends and family would line up outside their house to pick up a pizza. Now, Idske and Bas have two locations and a food truck. The secret? Letting the dough rise for 48 hours, which makes the crust light and airy and the pizza easier on the stomach. On weekends, they also serve sandwiches for lunch.

Focacceria

The Italian Valeria Lucente finds the Italian restaurants in Amsterdam surprisingly good, but she does miss the flavors of home. Especially the focaccia from her region. This delicate flatbread, about two centimeters thick, is airy, greasy and as soft as a cloud. Unlike focaccia from other Italian regions, the Genovese version does not have a crispy, but a soft top. This is because the dough is brushed with olive oil, water and salt before baking. Especially in Genoa, focaccia is enjoyed at every meal and that is now possible in Amsterdam.
