Architecture
The apartment complex 'Huize Koningsvijver' was designed in 1924 by G.J. Rutgers in a streamlined Amsterdam School style. The building is detached on three sides, has a rectangular floor plan, and was commissioned by N.V. 'Koningsvijver'. The rear of the building borders the Vondelpark and offers a view of the pond from which it takes its name.
Mr. Th.A. Wajer (Medemblik 1889 – Amsterdam 1975) was one of the first residents. He was an architect and real estate agent, as well as director of the construction company that built the property. Rutgers later designed another block residences on Churchilllaan residences behalf of Wajer. Wajer's construction company has built several thousand residences Amsterdam.
The apartment was completely renovated in 2020. During this renovation, the original layout and character were the guiding principles for the design and finish. Modern and authentic come together in a beautiful and understated way.
What the residents will miss
The architecture. Unlike most apartments in Amsterdam, which were created by dividing up townhouses, this property was originally designed as an apartment, and you can feel that in every detail. It is a harmonious whole; the spacious staircase, the well-thought-out ground floor layout, the spacious Rooms six French doors opening onto the various balconies, and the windows on all four sides of the home. We have therefore renovated the home in a timeless style, retaining the original floor plan and restoring the original stained glass.
I prefer to sit in the living room with a view of Vondelpark. In summer, it offers a beautiful green panorama, and in winter, a picturesque view of the Koningsvijver. Each season provides a new characteristic composition.
The neighborhood is lively, but also offers peace and quiet. It is spacious and easily accessible. The apartment has a feeling of tranquility, but as soon as you walk out the door, you find yourself in the middle of bustling city life. A neighborhood with wonderful restaurants, shops, the weekly ZuiderMRKT, museums, the Concertgebouw, the Vondelpark, and sports clubs just around the corner.
What I will miss most is the comfort, the tranquility, the architecture, a walk through Vondelpark, and the diverse surroundings, but above all, I will miss the spectacular view from the living room.
Neighborhood guide
At the end of the 19th century, as Amsterdam's city center became increasingly crowded, there was a growing need for a green neighborhood close to the center. In 1881, architect Zocher designed Willemspark, now better known as Vondelpark. A few decades later, the first villas were built around the ponds. Stately buildings in classical architectural styles welcomed families to this quieter and greener part of the city. The grandeur of that era is still intact. Both the residents and the high-quality offerings of Simon Meijssen bakery, Artichoc chocolatier, Wessels greengrocer, Jules bistro, Carter bar, and French seafood restaurant VISQUE give the residential neighborhood its contemporary allure. It is an ideal place to live in Amsterdam, where relaxation and inspiration are always close at hand.

Tamari Ya
Tamari Ya was founded by Imoto Yoshihisa and Yazawa Yuji, two Japanese entrepreneurs who started a farm-stay retreat in their village near Hiroshima and opened their first donut shop there in 2023 to revitalize their community. Out of their love for rice, they developed the komeko donut, made from rice flour from their own region and therefore naturally gluten-free. In Amsterdam, the donuts are handmade daily and fried in rice oil, without preservatives or colorants. The texture is different from what you are used to: less fluffy, more chewy, with varieties such as old fashioned or yeast-raised in flavors such as matcha, black sesame, and pistachio. The quiet, wood-dominated shop on Overtoom feels like a piece of the Japanese countryside in the city, where attention to food and the environment is central.

Focacceria
The Italian Valeria Lucente finds the Italian restaurants in Amsterdam surprisingly good, but she does miss the flavors of home. Especially the focaccia from her region. This delicate flatbread, about two centimeters thick, is airy, greasy and as soft as a cloud. Unlike focaccia from other Italian regions, the Genovese version does not have a crispy, but a soft top. This is because the dough is brushed with olive oil, water and salt before baking. Especially in Genoa, focaccia is enjoyed at every meal and that is now possible in Amsterdam.
