On the serene Lauriergracht, one of the radial canals that exudes a majestic atmosphere in the early hours, stands an impressive former school building of the Roman Catholic institution "De Voorzienigheid" (Providence). The left part of the building, with a different facade layout, served as a convent for the sisters who taught at the schools of De Voorzienigheid. Today, the building has been converted into an apartment complex. The current owners acquired the property as a pied-à-terre, a strategic base from which to visit their children and grandchildren living in Amsterdam more often. Now that the grandchildren are grown up and their children have moved to other parts of the country, the apartment is being used less and less. That is why they have decided to sell it. History
The congregation "The Poor Sisters of the Divine Child" was founded in 1852 and ran a home for neglected girls up to the age of 12 in the Jordaan district under the name "De Voorzienigheid" (Providence). Also known as the foundation of St. Jerome and Aemilianus. The founder was Pastor Petrus Hesseveld. In 1858, the sisters started a communion wafer bakery, which would grow into a factory that baked 600,000 communion wafers every week and celebrated its centenary in 1958.
The Voorzienigheid complex also included schools and orphanages, and in the first half of the 20th century covered a large part of the block between Lauriergracht, Konijnenstraat, and Elandsstraat. The building that now has the well-known house number 37 was also part of it: it housed a training college for female teachers. In 1991, the last sisters moved to Heemstede. The complex has a complicated construction history, with various renovations and extensions. Several Catholic architects contributed to its construction: Bleys, Duncker, and Joling.
What the residents will miss
Upon entering during the viewing, it was immediately clear: this is it! The high windows with partially old glass, the abundant light, and the impressive space make this apartment special. Not only the apartment itself, but also the surrounding canals, the Westertoren with its beautiful carillon, the atmospheric streets, and the fine dining spots contribute to the charm of this location. The museums, La Mar, the Vondelpark, and Dam Square are all within walking distance. For an ice cream in the evening, IJscuypje is just around the corner. After 13 years of enjoyment and creating memories, it is time to say goodbye to this beloved place. Although it is done with sadness, we are confident that the new residents will find just as much pleasure and comfort here.
