Warehouse ‘De Drieharingen’

This oasis of calm, with an almost village-like character in the middle of the busy dynamics of the city center, is unique. The hidden gardens and water enhance this feeling. I love water and the hustle and bustle of the city, but I always appreciate a quiet living environment—and that is certainly the case here. The amenities in the neighborhood are excellent. On Haarlemmerdijk, Haarlemmerstraat, and in the Jordaan, among other places, you will find a variety of shops, specialty stores, and caterers. There are also several good restaurants and cozy cafes in the area. The former warehouse, converted into a multifunctional residence, which we are privileged to sell as an office, is particularly surprising. With multiple kitchens, Bathrooms bedrooms spread over a total of six floors, the residence is ideal for working or practicing from home, or for multiple occupancy (e.g., informal care). The current owners have a license for a B&B, which is doing very well. In addition, each floor has something unique: a high loft, a large fireplace, side windows, and nice views. In short, a truly unique property in a quiet location in the center of the city.

Architecture

The building, constructed around 1893 and designated a national monument (no. 4212) since 1970, is a characteristic Amsterdam warehouse in traditional brick with natural stone accents. The façade is characterized by round arches above the windows, white bands that emphasize the horizontal lines, and tall narrow windows that refer to its original use as a storage facility. The stepped gable and green wooden exterior staircase reinforce its historic character. In 1994, the warehouse was converted into a two-unit residential building by architect Dirk Postma. In 2010, a thorough renovation by architect Van Zweeden followed, resulting in a robust and timeless design.

What the residents will miss

We fell in love with the old, sturdy, robust, and monumental character of our house—our house stands tall, as it were! We made a conscious decision to keep all floors as open as possible, which has always given us a very spacious feeling. We also bought this house with the idea that we could take our parents in if they ever needed extra care. In the end, we first used part of the house as a practice/office, and later rented it out to expats. That's the great thing about our house: you can do anything with it. We enjoy the view from every floor. In the spring and summer, it's wonderful to open the front windows and be in touch with the street. In the colder months, we like to sit and work at our kitchen table upstairs, from where we can gaze outside and enjoy the view of the canal and the boats. The special thing about Prinseneiland is that it feels like a small oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the historic center. As soon as you cross the railway tracks, you feel the tranquility wash over you like a blanket—yet within a few minutes you are back in the bustling city center. In the 17th century, Prinseneiland was part of the port of Amsterdam, making it a true warehouse district. Most of the warehouses have retained their historic character. Although we often sat on the picturesque little bridge in front of our house to drink a glass of wine in the evening sun, there are also several public gardens on the island where you can read, sunbathe, swim (with or without a local swimming club) and barbecue.

Prinseneiland, an enclave within the city.

Furthermore, Prinseneiland is a small enclave where you quickly get to know people. We don't like too much social control, but we always liked the fact that this is a neighborhood where you can chat with your neighbors. In our previous home, right in the center, we sometimes felt a bit more anonymous. Within a five-minute walk, you will find various nice and well-known shops, cafes, and restaurants—whether you walk to Westerpark, dive into the Jordaan, or visit another canal. For example, we love to walk to the organic market on Noordermarkt on Saturday mornings, combined with a visit to the cozy Lindengrachtmarkt. The Haarlemmerdijk and Haarlemmerstraat offer everything you need for a pleasant life: from organic shops to an artisan butcher, from boutiques to vintage shops, from The Movies cinema to the pharmacy, from lunch spots to bookshops, from the monumental tea shop Het Zonnetje to the supermarket – it's all there. What we will miss most is the unique combination of peace, space, and the public gardens on the island, as well as the proximity to countless wonderful amenities in the Jordaan, along the canals, and in Westerpark—all within walking distance.

Neighborhood guide

From here, the Noordermarkt, Westermarkt, and Westerpark are within walking distance. Both on Prinseneiland and Bickerseiland, as well as in the Jordaan, you will find various cozy cafes, excellent restaurants, quality shops, and good caterers. This location is also conveniently situated for public transportation and major roads. The Central Station is within cycling distance and even easily accessible on foot. Living on Prinseneiland is a unique experience: the combination of tranquility and dynamism is special. The residents form a diverse community and often live there for a long time — which says a lot about how pleasant it is to live in this place. Prinseneiland has always been popular with artists such as Jacob Olie and Breitner. Even today, there are still relatively many artists and craftsmen living there.

The Movies

The Movies cinema has been around since 1912. It is often called the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, but formally that is the Uitkijk cinema, which registered a year earlier. In its early years, the cinema was used as a small-scale neighborhood cinema, and only after the Second World War were films shown to a larger audience. Today, it is one of the most popular arthouse cinemas in Amsterdam. Many visitors also come to The Movies to admire the historic interior. The cinema is located in a 17th-century building on the Haarlemmerdijk and the original art-deco interior has been well preserved. A visit to this cinema feels like a journey through time.

The Ravestijn Gallery

The Ravestijn Gallery was founded in Amsterdam in 2012 by Jasper Bode and Narda Van 't Veer with a focus on exploratory and provocative approaches to contemporary photography. And they have succeeded in this. The gallery represents various national and international experimental artists who demonstrate the power of photography in all kinds of different ways. This modern approach to contemporary photography makes the exhibitions at De Ravestijn Gallery very interesting. But, in addition, the artworks are also a great aesthetic pleasure to look at and perhaps even a good source of inspiration for decorating a new home?

Boon & de Koot

Following the success of Zoldering, chef Thomas Bron, wine importer Joost Clarijs, and sommeliers Job Seuren and Wout Jans opened Boon & de Koot, an accessible wine bar in the Zeeheldenbuurt neighborhood, without compromising on quality. The menu starts with hearty snacks such as oeuf mayo with roasted garlic and lovage, cleverly served so you can eat it in one bite. This is followed by refined starters such as raw sea bass with beurre noisette and calamansi or a coarse steak tartare with radicchio and anchovies. The real showstopper is the dish of roasted peas with tomatillo, olive, and egg yolk, a perfect interplay of smoke, freshness, and creaminess. Inside, there is a French bistro atmosphere, while outside, the terrace with marble tables and burgundy chairs invites you to linger for another glass.

De Vrouw met de Baard - the name alone is reason enough to pop in here sometime. Entirely with its own merchandise, its own sambal and soul cookbook and playlist, the eatery in the center is making its mark on the Indonesian/Moluccan cuisine. Even though the Rendang is the dish for which people come from miles around, the vegetarian alternatives with jackfruit and eggplant are also more than worth it.
