Spotlight: Maria Magdalena, a loft apartment in a former rectory

AM105607-1913432-Spaarndammerstraat-9A,-Amsterdam-196655281

A loft apartment in a former rectory.

We had been aware of this unique building since the moment an investor acquired the property for redevelopment. Originally a beautiful and characteristic parish house, the building, which was in a state of disrepair, had belonged to the Diocese of Haarlem. Although the developer owned a beautiful property, he initially had no concrete plans for its repurposing. Ultimately, he decided to divide the building into separate units and sell them to a number of private individuals. |
The current sellers were among them and showed the courage and vision to project this project . They saw the potential and possibilities to turn it into a unique family home. The size, high ceilings, windows, and garden offered prospects that needed to be further developed.
The transformation of this apartment by the owners is impressive. The choices they made and the way they renovated the property testify to their refined taste and eye for detail. For those looking for space, light, and a turnkey home with its own identity, this offers a unique opportunity.

History

The rectory of the Maria Magdalena Church, designed by Pierre Cuypers and demolished in 1968, was located on the tip of the triangle that now forms the Domela Nieuwenhuisplantsoen. The demolition of the church, deemed necessary due to 'stone rot' in the foundations, meant the loss of an architectural heritage site.
For many years, the rectory served a social function for the neighborhood, until the building became too dilapidated to remain standing and the diocese was forced to sell the property. In 2015, the building underwent a transformation into three "loft" apartments. Although the exterior has remained intact, the internal renovation has led to significant changes, Local authority the Local authority to deem the property unworthy of monument status.
Nevertheless, the building still retains its grandeur and character. The interior, with its loft-like features, offers high ceilings, large windows, and plenty of open space. The most striking architectural feature is the open mezzanine with an elegant staircase connecting the lower floor to the bel-etage, optimally linking the living areas.

What the residents will miss

Our house at Spaarndammerstraat 9a is a historic house, built in 1891 by the famous architect Pierre Cuypers – known for the Rijksmuseum and Central Station – and has a lot to offer. The house consists of two floors: the ground floor and the basement. Thanks to the high ceilings, large windows, and elegant stained-glass doors, the house exudes space and character. It also has a spacious veranda and a beautiful garden with direct access to the green Domela Plantsoen park. What we particularly appreciate is the spacious and open layout of the house, which is enhanced by the single-story design and high ceilings. The proximity to Westerpark is also a big plus; here we can enjoy walking, running, having a coffee, or taking the children to the playgrounds, petting zoo, and cinema. In addition, the house is conveniently located near the Jordaan and the Noordermarkt, where we often buy fresh produce and flowers on Saturdays. It is a great location because it is close to the city center, but you still enjoy the tranquility of the neighborhood. Parking is never a problem here. In addition, there are several excellent schools in the area, such as the Vrije School Amsterdam West (Waldorf), Burcht (popular with expats), and Theo Thijssen, which makes the location even more attractive for families.

Neighborhood guide

The Spaarndammerbuurt, originally a working-class neighborhood for dockworkers, has developed into a dynamic and diverse district. Spaarndammerstraat, which in recent years has positioned itself as a popular shopping and dining street, attracts both local residents and residents of the nearby Houthavens.
Located on Westerpark, this property offers a lively environment with numerous playgrounds, cozy cafes, and dining options. This area is ideal for families, pet owners, and those who enjoy a good life.
Westerpark itself is home to several local favorites, such as Ijskuipe, famous for its exquisite ice cream, and Mossels & Gin, which serves delicious specialty beers. For the best coffee, De Bakkerswinkel and De Espresso Fabriek are excellent choices. In addition, Toki, a popular eatery, is only a ten-minute walk away in the Jordaan. The immediate vicinity also offers practical amenities, including two supermarkets within walking distance: AH and Jumbo, a local bakery for fresh bread, a butcher, and a number of cozy bars. The Houthaven is nearby, and there are many schools and childcare facilities within walking distance, making this location particularly attractive for families and professionals.

Boon & de Koot

Following the success of Zoldering, chef Thomas Bron, wine importer Joost Clarijs, and sommeliers Job Seuren and Wout Jans opened Boon & de Koot, an accessible wine bar in the Zeeheldenbuurt neighborhood, without compromising on quality. The menu starts with hearty snacks such as oeuf mayo with roasted garlic and lovage, cleverly served so you can eat it in one bite. This is followed by refined starters such as raw sea bass with beurre noisette and calamansi or a coarse steak tartare with radicchio and anchovies. The real showstopper is the dish of roasted peas with tomatillo, olive, and egg yolk, a perfect interplay of smoke, freshness, and creaminess. Inside, there is a French bistro atmosphere, while outside, the terrace with marble tables and burgundy chairs invites you to linger for another glass.

Cafe Beurre

Café Beurre is an accessible place where you are always welcome without a reservation. The restaurant has a preference for vegetables and butter, and does not use meat or fish in their dishes. The wine list is compiled by a former employee of Balthazar's Keuken and De Wijnwinkel, and offers a selection of French and Italian wines at decent prices. The restaurant also pays a lot of attention to aperitifs and serves a classic French snack of radish with homemade butter from organic farm De Beekhoeve. The menu changes regularly and offers generously flavored, uncomplicated dishes that seem to have been created on the fly.

Cantine de Caron

Cantine de Caron in Westerpark is the fourth restaurant of renowned chef Alain Caron and his sons. The restaurant started a few years ago as a pop-up called Grand Caron on the Westergasterrein, but it soon became clear that they could stay under the name Cantine. You can take a seat inside at one of the tables or outside on the sun-drenched terrace overlooking the Westerpark. The Movies

The Movies cinema has been around since 1912. It is often called the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, but formally that is the Uitkijk cinema, which registered a year earlier. In its early years, the cinema was used as a small-scale neighborhood cinema, and only after the Second World War were films shown to a larger audience. Today, it is one of the most popular arthouse cinemas in Amsterdam. Many visitors also come to The Movies to admire the historic interior. The cinema is located in a 17th-century building on the Haarlemmerdijk and the original art-deco interior has been well preserved. A visit to this cinema feels like a journey through time.
