Monumental working in the heart of the city

286-14 Herengracht

The Deli-Batavia Company

The building, designed by Adolf Daniël Nicolaas van Gendt, is a classicist building from Year of construction with Amsterdam School details, such as decorative brickwork and balustrades. The client, De Deli-Batavia Maatschappij, founded in 1875, was a colonial trading company that established its Dutch office at Herengracht 286. However, in order to expand further, more space was needed. In 1920, three houses, numbers 286, 288, and 290, were demolished to make way for the construction of this new office building. Although the client wanted a building that would fit in with its surroundings, its large size meant that it Immediately stood Immediately the row of houses. From 1965 to 2015, the building was used by the University of Amsterdam. Initially as the Historical Seminar. From 1990 onwards, it housed the Art History Institute. It is a recent monument, as it was only listed in 2001.

Gray-blue glazed ceramic

The stairwell is clad in nuanced gray-blue glazed ceramic. A single decorative element was used for the paneling, balustrades, and column cladding: an oval with an integrated wave motif. The staircase and hall feature glazed tiles and stained-glass windows. The stained glass windows were made by W. Bogtman and provide light in the stairwell. The heating radiators are incorporated into the paneling by means of earthenware grilles.

Upon entering, you are welcomed by a distinctive hall and staircase, characterized by gray-blue glazed ceramics and stained glass windows. The spacious layout, distinctive details, and abundance of natural daylight are unmistakable as soon as you step onto the first floor. The heart of the office space is illuminated by a large skylight, creating an open and light atmosphere throughout the space. The large, tall windows at both the front and rear allow plenty of natural light to enter and create an inspiring environment."

Galerie Bart is a contemporary art gallery in Amsterdam that focuses on both established and young artists who graduated in the Netherlands and excel in their innovative craftsmanship. At Bart, you will find artists who create work that is either playful and fresh, robust and sharp, serene and light-hearted, or serious with a touch of humor. They explore the boundaries of their medium and question them, with the aim of pushing those boundaries.

Two Story

Two Story was born out of the belief that art is for everyone and that contemporary art does not have to be distant or intimidating. The founders transformed a historic canal-side building into a two-story combination of gallery, design store, and café that feels like a real home. Their vision revolves around creating that Sunday Morning Feeling, with the smell of fresh coffee, soft music, and art that blends into the daily rhythm. For the design, they collaborated with Copenhagen-based Atelier Axo, known for their spatial storytelling and sense of balance between old and new. The atmosphere is warm and accessible, a place where nostalgia and innovation come together in an environment that makes art feel natural.

Spui Book Market

The Book Market on Spui is held every Friday, throughout the year, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Only in cases of force majeure (such as very bad weather) is the market canceled. But this doesn't happen often, because true book lovers aren't deterred by a little rain, and neither are the sellers. You'll find second-hand and antiquarian books here, and the market has been a household name for thirty years, even abroad. You can also find prints, pamphlets, posters, documents, and magazines here, in multiple languages!

Neighborhood guide: De Pijp. A selection of fine places around the Sarphatipark. Amsterdamsche Courant (1892): "The best time to see why De Pijp is named as such is in the morning between eight and nine o'clock. If you station yourself then, you will see what a stream of people rushes through the streets to the old city; then they are in fact long, wide pipes."
