Spotlight: Notting Hill in Amsterdam
Notting Hill
The streets connecting Sarphatipark and the Amstel are beautiful. Whenever I cycle through them, I am embraced by the city's conviviality. There are lovely restaurants, specialty shops, and of course the Albert Cuyp market. The entrance to this apartment is on the southwest corner, giving it a sunny sidewalk. It's a wonderful place to watch the Amsterdammers pass by.
I got to know the current residents through Olivier from A Studio Named Four. He is responsible for the choice of materials and the finishing of the apartment. In beautiful Japandi style, he has created a special living environment, and the result of his efforts is a balanced and very atmospheric ground floor apartment. The apartment has been featured in Scandinavian Living magazine.
This apartment fits well within our portfolio and we are curious to see who the new resident will be.

Design vision
The house is part of a building complex, originally built as three townhouses on Hemonystraat, commissioned by Peereboom and Van der Sande and located north of the newly constructed streets Jan van der Heijdenstraat and Govert Flinckstraat. This took Location the nineteenth century.
The construction period of this time falls within the Neo-Renaissance, the most popular architectural style in the second half of the 19th century. This was a reinterpretation of the Dutch Renaissance of the 16th century. Characteristic of the Neo-Renaissance are the horizontal layers of natural stone between the brickwork. However, the historical sentiment was now emphasized even more strongly by being even more exuberant with the decorations. This also applied to shops, which wanted to stand out in order to attract customers.
The archives show that its current function as a residence was granted in 1991. Before that, it was a cigar shop, as evidenced by applications for facade advertising. The division dates from 2004, and in 2017 the house was modified and the old garage was added. This part was also re-founded, a number of skylights were added to allow daylight to enter, and it was deepened. The Roof terrace was also Roof terrace at that time.
The former retail space has now been completely converted into a home, and the foundation has also been renewed with concrete piles. Internally, it has recently been completely renovated and everything has been renewed. This can be seen and felt in the apartment; everything is in balance and has been well thought out. The personal input of the owners, in combination with Olivier van A Studio Named Four, has resulted in this beautiful ground floor apartment.
What the residents will miss
We feel most comfortable in our cozy living room. We designed the space to be functional, from the built-in entertainment center to the designer lighting in the room. With plenty of natural light streaming in through the large windows, it's the perfect place to relax. It's also a great space for entertaining friends, as the kitchen and dining room are conveniently located next to the living room.
We have been living in De Pijp since we moved to Amsterdam, and it is easy to understand why. Despite being located in the bustling heart of Amsterdam, it retains a close-knit, village atmosphere. The apartment has the best of both worlds because it is located on a quiet residential street, but between the Amstel and Van Woustraat. Sarpatipark is just around the corner, and we often walk to the Albert Cuyp market for fresh produce and a quick lunch when we work from home. There is always something new opening, so we never have to leave the neighborhood.
Our favorite restaurants in the neighborhood are Graham’s Kitchen, Arles, and Pekelhaaring, and our favorite cafés are Coffee Bru and Badeta. And for shopping, we like to visit our friends’ store, Lucille, just a block away.
Shortly after purchasing the apartment, we got married in Amsterdam, and it was wonderful to see all our family and friends from abroad gather in our home between events. It was a truly special time. In addition, it was very nice to be featured in Scandinavian Living Magazine—we bought an extra copy for the next owner!
Neighborhood guide
The apartment is located in the Zuid district, in the most sought-after and quietest part of De Pijp. De Pijp was built at the end of the 19th century to provide housing for newcomers who moved to the capital for work. Freddy Heineken's father opened the Heineken brewery here in 1886. The first workers' houses, around Albert Cuypstraat, were built quickly and cheaply. Later, Berlage added houses in the Amsterdam School style towards the Diamantbuurt. It is said that the neighborhood owes its name to the long, straight streets, which are shaped like a pipe.
De Pijp is known for its liveliness and cozy restaurants and cafés, all within walking distance.
The Albert Cuyp Market and Sarphatipark are key to the dynamic vibe of De Pijp. Artists and writers like Piet Mondriaan, Carel Willink, and Gerard Reve lived and worked here. The lively, diverse population brought many cafes and eateries to the neighborhood. Today, the neighborhood is known as the Latin Quarter of Amsterdam, with many dynamic restaurants such as Brut de Mer for champagne and oysters, the Italian Impero Romano, and the French Arle of Caron. In addition, there are cozy eateries from all corners of the world in the Van Woustraat for a quick bite to eat.

L'Angoletto
At L’Angoletto it seems as if time has stood still. The restaurant has no website, reservations are not possible and payment by card is not accepted either, but the food is delicious! The chef is known for being proud of his food and he attaches great importance to traditions, so don't dare to ask for cheese with your pasta with fish. This is all worth it because you can eat the best Italian food in the Pijp here.
