City palaces in the Willemspark neighborhood

The emergence of the Willemspark neighborhood: Urban expansion with allure

Today, the Willemspark neighborhood is one of Amsterdam's most beloved districts. Its elegant mansions, wide avenues, and green appearance clearly reflect the city's 19th-century expansion. But how exactly did this charming neighborhood come into being?
In the second half of the 19th century, Amsterdam was literally bursting at the seams. The old city within the Singelgracht canal had become too small for the rapidly growing population, partly as a result of industrialization and economic progress. From around 1880, the Local authority therefore decided to undertake large-scale urban expansion outside the former city limits. The Willemsparkbuurt, named after the Willemspark (now Vondelpark), was a wonderful example of this.
Around the Vondelpark, which opened in 1865, a residential area was created that was primarily intended for the upper middle class and the wealthy bourgeoisie. Architects such as Pierre Cuypers and Eduard Cuypers played an important role in designing the imposing buildings and villas, which are characterized by rich detailing and influences from various architectural styles, ranging from neo-Renaissance to art nouveau. An important part of this neighborhood development was the focus on greenery and spaciousness. Wide streets such as Koninginneweg, Emmastraat, and Valeriusstraat were constructed, and much attention was paid to park-like elements and green squares. This gave the neighborhood a strikingly airy and elegant appearance, which contrasted sharply with the more densely built-up city center.

In the decades that followed, the Willemspark neighborhood grew into an attractive residential area for artists, intellectuals, successful entrepreneurs, and dignitaries. The neighborhood has always retained its stately character and remains one of the most sought-after residential areas in Amsterdam, where residents enjoy the tranquility, historical beauty, and comfort of a neighborhood that was once designed as a model of prosperity and elegance.

Focacceria

The Italian Valeria Lucente finds the Italian restaurants in Amsterdam surprisingly good, but she does miss the flavors of home. Especially the focaccia from her region. This delicate flatbread, about two centimeters thick, is airy, greasy and as soft as a cloud. Unlike focaccia from other Italian regions, the Genovese version does not have a crispy, but a soft top. This is because the dough is brushed with olive oil, water and salt before baking. Especially in Genoa, focaccia is enjoyed at every meal and that is now possible in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Winery

Although they have been professionally tasting and selecting wine at Wijnhuis Amsterdam for more than 25 years, the wine house in Amsterdam is a fairly recent addition to their story. After numerous tasting sessions, they were so enthusiastic about the German wines that they were only too happy to give the wines a platform within the Netherlands. In May 2018, they opened Wijnhuis.Amsterdam, initially with only three of their own imports from Germany. They now represent an impressive range of twenty German winemakers, three from Austria and one from Luxembourg. When selecting the wines, elegance, drinkability, low alcohol percentages and minimal intervention in the production process are important.

De Wijnkaart

De Wijnkaart is located in the Museum Quarter in Amsterdam-Zuid. All kinds of wines from the forgotten Eastern European wine countries are served here. Although the history of wine making started here, these countries are often forgotten in the wine world. If you have become curious about all kinds of wines, you can do a wine tasting in the wine bar, where you can choose which ones you want to taste. In addition to the appetizer platters that change weekly, there are also main courses on the menu.

There are quite a few spaces where you smell the sewer or sanitary facilities, where there has been a lot of smoking or where the extraction is not good and it smells like food. The most simple way of scent in the house is that it smells clean. Many people associate cleaning or detergent with a clean, tidy and well-kept house. In addition, you can turn on the ambiance. Just like with light and music, you can soften or strengthen the atmosphere. You can make it smell very homely or very modern. Rural or artistic. Or very minimalist or intimate.
