After city expansions, the old defensive canals came to lie within the city walls and lost their function. But they were given a role in the Location would ultimately make the city wealthy: transport of merchant goods. This property is located in an industrial building at Quellijnstraat 119, which was originally built by Heineken's brother for his plans for Heineken's Window Cleaning Company and was later used as a factory for Luxaflex blinds. Spotlight: 'In Elias', a monument dating from around 1645 in the city center of Amsterdam. The building served as a bakery until 1880. The facade is built in Renaissance style with a stepped gable, masonry and arches, and sturdy wooden window frames with glazing bars. The restoration in 2008 restored the building to its original grandeur. Much has been preserved inside, including beautiful paneling, wainscoting, and the exposed construction.

Spotlight; In the heart of Oud-Zuid, between Museumplein and PC Hooftstraat, the sophisticated Petit Paris is emerging. This mansion on Jan Luijkenstraat, built in 1899 for the affluent middle class, features beautiful classic neo-Renaissance characteristics and comprises seven suites ranging from approximately 45 m² to 219 m², the last four residences will soon be residences sale.
Famous physicists
When I first entered the former lecture hall of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Amsterdam as an architect some fifteen years ago, I was initially fascinated by the spatial quality and then, of course, by the historical value that, after almost a century and a half, can still be seen in the monumental ceiling with the eighteen names of famous physicists carved in plaster and the plaque of professor and Nobel Prize winner Van der Waals above the entrance doors. Einstein even gave guest lectures there.’
Spatial quality
The challenge was then to meet the requirements of a contemporary home while retaining that spatial quality, without detracting from its rich history. This was achieved by building a mezzanine at half the height of part of the approximately 12 x 12 m and approximately 6.5 m high space, creating a freely configurable living space of approximately 100 square meters. The utility rooms are located underneath. The different levels are connected by stairs. The use of voids and lots of glass preserves the spaciousness.
Daylight and sunlight flow in abundantly through the more than four-meter-high windows. The water of the Nieuwe Keizersgracht is reflected on the monumental ceiling, to which nothing has been added. The lighting is indirect.

Amsterdam has a new omakase restaurant called Shigure; 'the unpredictable monsoon of the Netherlands,' as they call it themselves. The restaurant is located at the back of Sushi Fanatics. The counter with eight seats is open two days a week (Friday and Saturday) with one seating at 5:30 p.m. and another at 8:15 p.m. Chef Ryusaku Hiruma provides you with a genuine omakase experience in which he showcases his refined and original sushi skills.

Filmtheater Kriterion is one of the first projects of Stichting Kriterion and has been run entirely by students since 1945. You will find the film theater next to the Roetserseiland campus complex of the University of Amsterdam. Kriterion's weekly program consists of a wide range of films; you can visit Kriterion for arthouse films, documentaries, and international screenings. In the Kriterion café, you can enjoy a drink together before or after the film. We highly recommend the Sneak Preview, which Kriterion was the first to introduce in the Netherlands. Maritime Museum
Discover the shipping and maritime history of the Netherlands in the Maritime Museum. The museum is located in the water on the Oosterdok; this building was formerly used as a warehouse for the storage of ship equipment and cannons when Amsterdam was the largest port in the world.
