City gardens have been a part of Amsterdam for centuries. Hidden green spaces emerged behind canal-side houses, courtyards, and old city blocks as a counterpoint to the densely built-up city. After city expansions, the old defensive canals came to lie within the city walls and lost their function. But they were given a role in the Location would ultimately make the city wealthy: transport of merchant goods. Spotlight: 'In Elias', a monument dating from around 1645 in the city center of Amsterdam. The building served as a bakery until 1880. The facade is built in Renaissance style with a stepped gable, masonry and arches, and sturdy wooden window frames with glazing bars. The restoration in 2008 restored the building to its original grandeur. Much has been preserved inside, including beautiful paneling, wainscoting, and the exposed construction.

This mansion on Jan Luijkenstraat, built in 1899 for the affluent middle class, features beautiful classic neo-Renaissance characteristics and comprises seven suites ranging from approximately 45 m² to 219 m², the last four residences will soon be residences sale.

Living on Prinseneiland is enchanting because of the surrounding waters and the historic setting. The water provides light and reflection, while all the buildings here still recall their original function for the city. This also applies to this special building, a former warehouse that stands robustly on the waterfront. As a real estate agent, I have cycled past it regularly over the years and have always wondered what it would be like to experience the bridge from the inside.
When I first saw it, I was surprised by the unexpected height. Whereas warehouse spaces often have limited heights, all Rooms offer plenty of space. The robust character of the exterior is continued inside, with wooden columns, beams, and clean brickwork that emphasize the original structure and function.

Architecture
The building's history dates back to 1910, when there was already a beautiful warehouse that was also used as a residence. The owner at the time, Amsterdamsch Veem N.V., wanted to expand the entire building and convert it into a larger warehouse. This involved enlarging the floors and removing the original residence. The foundations were reinforced and the supporting structures were strengthened. The building archives show that obtaining permits at the time could be a cumbersome process, especially for adding toilets. In the 1980s, the transformation into a residential building began. Initially, there were live-work apartments, but these later became exclusive residences, including this ground floor apartment that occupies almost the entire ground floor. The original column structure was retained, and the previous residents were eventually granted permission to add an extra façade to the side of the building, with an exit to the adjacent communal garden. Internally, the entire apartment has been modernized and optimally laid out. The fixtures and finishes are strikingly timeless and fit perfectly with the historic building.
What the residents will miss
Prinseneiland is the most beautiful part of Amsterdam. It is located in the old center, but it feels like a beautiful village, completely surrounded by water and beautiful nature, away from the hustle and bustle. It is car-free, making it ideal for children and adults who love the outdoors. The only reason we want to sell the house is that we are emigrating for an extended period of time. What we will miss are the walks to and from Westerpark, our shopping on Haarlemmerstraat, our favorite bakery, butcher, and coffee shops, swimming and SUPing around the island, boating, fresh bread on Sundays on the bridge next to our house, reading the newspaper in the garden, barbecuing on our balcony or in the garden, the peace and quiet, the beautiful trees with white and pink blossoms, and the relaxed, creative atmosphere of the islanders. Inside the house, you will experience a wonderful sense of serenity and space, thanks to the very high ceilings, the view of the water, the boat, the bridge, and the fantastic kitchen, large living room, and beautifully designed bathroom and bedrooms. The original wooden beams add the finishing touch. We have enjoyed living here very much and it is with some sadness that For Sale .
Neighborhood guide
Located in a beautiful and quiet spot on the main waterway of the Bickersgracht, yet close to the liveliness of the western canal belt, Haarlemmerstraat, and Jordaan. From here, the Noordermarkt, Westermarkt, and Westerpark are within walking distance. On Prinseneiland, Bickerseiland, and in the Jordaan, you will find various cozy cafes, excellent restaurants, high-quality shops, and caterers. This neighborhood offers a unique mix of tranquility and dynamism. The location is also ideal in terms of public transport and roads. Central Station is even within walking or cycling distance.
Living on Prinseneiland is a unique experience; the residents are very diverse and mostly long-term residents, which underlines the quality of life here.

The Movies cinema has been around since 1912. It is often called the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, but formally that is the Uitkijk cinema, which registered a year earlier. Today, it is one of the most popular arthouse cinemas in Amsterdam. Many visitors also come to The Movies to admire the historic interior. The cinema is located in a 17th-century building on the Haarlemmerdijk and the original art-deco interior has been well preserved. A visit to this cinema feels like a journey through time.
