The neighborhood guide

A few minutes' walk takes you to the Amstel River, where you can stroll along the canals without the hustle and bustle of tourists and traffic. There are so many beautiful places within walking distance of our house, such as Wertheim Park, Artis Zoo, Restaurant de Plantage, Hortus Botanicus, the Magere Burg, the National Opera & Ballet, the lively Utrechtsestraat, and much more. It's also the perfect place to take our boat out. From a leisurely cruise through the canals on a warm summer evening to a day trip to Muiden on the weekend! Of course, there is also a wealth of history in the former Jewish quarter. The neighborhood is still enriched by the Jewish Museum, the Portuguese Synagogue, the National Holocaust Museum, and the National Holocaust Names Monument, all within walking distance. On weekends, we like to have breakfast at Cafe-Restaurant de Plantage, which is wonderful in both winter and summer thanks to its huge terrace. Utrechtsestraat is full of great restaurants, such as Zolderig and De Juwelier. In addition to restaurants, it is a wonderful shopping street with stores such as Mobilia, Bolia, Aesop, De Gouden Ton, Sissy Boy, Essentials Antwerpen, Vanilia, Kaashuis Tromp, Filippa K, and many more! A few minutes' walk away is Kadijkenplein, where we like to visit De Bakkers van Oost for good bread, Cafe Kadijk for delicious Indonesian dishes, a pizza at Sotto, or a lazy brunch at Bakers & Roasters. At Entrepotdok, we like to visit Entrepot for a date night or sit at one of the cozy cafes by the water. For the last rays of sunshine, you can sit at Cafe Smit & Voogt until late at night, or Cafe Koosje. A few minutes by bike will take you to the canals at Cae Marcella for a delicious drink.

Willet-Holthuysen House

The impressive Willet-Holthuysen House is located in the heart of Amsterdam. This double mansion on Herengracht houses numerous period rooms. The name of the house is derived from the couple who lived here at the end of the 19th century: Abraham Willet and Louisa Holthuysen. They collected a wealth of art and objects and had the interior designed according to their personal taste. Even at the time, this beautiful house was considered a tribute to a romantic past. The interior served as a means for the couple to share their taste and prosperity with others. The magnificent salons are decorated in the style of Louis XVI, and the garden is symmetrically laid out as a formal French garden. In these romantic period rooms, the Amsterdam Museum organizes exhibitions featuring work by contemporary artists and collectors.

At char.d restaurant, chefs Dean Baker and Slava Nazaryan are at the helm. The restaurant's name refers to the cooking technique known as charring: slow grilling over charcoal or wood and cooking at high temperatures to develop rich barbecue flavors. At char.d, these modern barbecue techniques, combined with high-quality ingredients, form the common thread. At char.d, guests can enjoy dishes ranging from yellowtail in olive oil to corn-fed chicken with miso and beurre noissette and classics such as the New York strip. The two chefs complement each other perfectly: Dean specializes in meat, while Slava focuses on fish. Together with maître d' Job Guikema, the chefs have created a restaurant that takes a different approach to barbecue: refined and international. The beating heart of the restaurant is the Slovenian Kopa charcoal grill in the open kitchen, affectionately nicknamed "Bobby" by the British Baker.

Restaurant CUE Amsterdam offers a unique experience where gastronomy (restaurant) and music (listening bar) blend perfectly.  CUE's culinary approach is refined and innovative, revealing subtle Northern European and Japanese influences. This is thanks to chef George Kataras and sommelier Mohamed Aous, who previously worked together at the Michelin-starred restaurant Vanderveen and were also awarded a star here in 2025.

Nam Kee

Nam Kee became nationally known through the book "Oesters van Nam Kee" (Oysters from Nam Kee) by author Kees Beijnum. This restaurant, serving authentic Cantonese cuisine, has long been a household name in Amsterdam. After the first restaurant opened its doors at Zeedijk 111 in 1981, two new locations quickly followed (Geldersekade 117 and Maria Heinekenplein 4). The atmosphere at the Nieuwmarkt location is open and cozy. You can come here for a hearty meal with a large group or for lunch with a smaller party. The staff prioritizes good service and friendliness.
