A selection of cozy brown cafes in Amsterdam

In the narrow streets of Amsterdam you will find the 'brown cafes', traditional pubs where time seems to stand still. These places owe their name to the warm, brown tones of the wooden interiors, formed by years of smoke and the flickering light of candles. Here, locals and tourists come together to enjoy a glass of beer, a jenever or a simple snack, such as a cheese board or bitterballen. The charm of these cafes lies in their timelessness: regular guests have known the bartender for years, and stories from the past are still shared. Icons such as Café Chris and Café Hoppe breathe history and offer an intimate atmosphere that connects generations. Volewijck

‘Voelwijc’ (1308) or ‘Voolwijc’ (1324) is a combination of the Middle Dutch ‘voel’ (Zaans ‘vool’), meaning ‘foal’, and ‘wijk’, referring to a farm, settlement, or village. The variant Vogelwijk is a reinterpretation from the 17th century. Amsterdam north of the IJ initially consisted only of theVolewijck peninsula, over which the city gained control in 1393 (right of manorialism). Until 1795, this was the site of the gallows where convicts were hanged after execution as a deterrent. To finance the tow canal to Purmerend, the city levied a toll here from 1662 onwards.
Volewijck is located in the middle of Amsterdam-Noord. Whereas Noord used to be a somewhat less desirable area, it has now become a cultural hotspot. More and more restaurant owners and caterers are setting up shop here. This is not surprising, as the neighborhood has a lot to offer, such as its characteristic 1930s architecture. Thanks to the North-South metro line, you can be on the other side of the water in just a few minutes.

Modern Café

Since 2012, the former Twentsche Bank building has been transformed into Café Modern. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of this charming building, where a varied chef's menu (5 or 6 courses) is served. You are welcome to enjoy a glass of wine, oysters, cheese, or other delicacies at the bar.  The chefs work exclusively with seasonal products from local and small-scale suppliers. It is interesting to note that the old vault of the bank building offers the possibility to enjoy a private dinner. The upper floors of the building serve as a boutique hotel with three Rooms.

We Bar Vindict

Richard Dietz (39) and Roderick Meijer (35) of Vindict are passionate about wine. With two successful wine shops to their name, they have now opened the Vindict wine bar together with chef Samir Doueiri (56) and sommelier Jan-Jaap Altenburg (31). The bar, made from acacia wood from the Dassemus vineyard in Chaam, exudes warmth and authenticity. Enjoy accompanying dishes, such as escargots with garlic and herb butter or Dutch shrimp cocktail with avocado and lemon, freshly prepared by chef Doueiri.  The wine list features a selection of more than fifty wines served by the glass and more than eight hundred wines by the bottle. You can also do a tasting or order a blind wine in a black glass for €7.50. If you correctly name the grape, the glass is on the house.

Treasure Depot

Treasure Depot on Van der Pekstraat is the place to go for genuine secondhand treasures. After 15 years of selling at various markets, owners Emmanuelle and Frank decided it was time to open a real store. The ceiling is covered with the most beautiful retro lamps, but they have much more: jewelry, furniture, sunglasses, and other cool stuff. Feast your eyes and, if you're lucky, take home a new gadget or a beautiful lamp.
