The Michelin Story: From Tires to Gastronomy
The Michelin Guide was created in 1900, when French brothers André and Édouard Michelin, founders of the Michelin tire company, decided to publish a guide to assist motorists. This guide contained information about gas stations, maps, repair services, and, above all, restaurants and hotels. The goal was simple: to get more cars on the road and thereby increase demand for tires. Over time, the guide evolved from a practical manual to a prestigious reference work. In 1926, Michelin introduced stars to distinguish exceptional restaurants. Since then, Michelin stars have become a symbol of culinary perfection.
The Awards
The Michelin Guide is known worldwide as the authority on culinary excellence. A listing in this prestigious guide marks a restaurant as exceptional and distinctive. The most famous recognition within the guide is the Michelin stars. One star indicates that a restaurant is very good in its category, two stars indicate excellent cuisine that is worth a detour, and three stars are awarded to exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey in itself. In addition to stars, Michelin also awards other distinctions. The Bib Gourmand highlights restaurants that offer an excellent meal at an outstanding price-quality ratio. For restaurants that focus on Sustainability environmentally friendly practices, Michelin introduced the Green Star in 2020, reinforcing its focus on responsible cooking.
The path to these awards is thorough and objective. Michelin inspectors anonymously evaluate restaurants based on five criteria: the quality of the products used, the culinary technique, the balance and refinement of flavors, the value for money, and the consistency of performance. Only the very best restaurants are honored to be included in this exclusive guide, which highlights culinary excellence worldwide.
