North in motion
The Other Side Awakens
North in motion – from shipyard to creative engine of the city
Amsterdam-Noord has long been a blind spot on the urban map. For many, it was 'the other side' — a part of the city you passed through on the way to something else. But those who now take the ferry from Central Station no longer disembark in the fringes of the city. On the contrary: you arrive in a dynamic area that is reinventing Amsterdam.
Noord has a rich history. Life here once revolved around heavy industry, shipbuilding, and working-class neighborhoods. The NDSM shipyard was the beating heart of Dutch shipbuilding and formed a world unto itself for decades. But where steel once set the tone, today you will find a different kind of manufacturing culture: creative, innovative, flexible. Old warehouses have been transformed into studios, workshops, restaurants, and cultural breeding grounds. And the raw edge of yesteryear? It has remained—but now as a characterful foundation for a new generation of entrepreneurs, creators, and visionaries.
What makes Noord so attractive is not only its space or raw charm, but also its freedom. Here, there is room for growth, for experimentation, for new combinations of living and working. Whether you want to build a film studio on the NDSM, start a circular production company in Buiksloterham, or open a design agency in a monumental school building: Noord makes it possible. Sometimes it even seems as if the rules are just a little more flexible in Noord—or at least the imagination is greater.
At the same time, accessibility remains a recurring topic of conversation in the city. After all, how can you make Noord a fully-fledged part of Amsterdam when it is literally cut off from the rest? The arrival of the North/South metro line was a turning point: in five minutes from Van der Pekstraat to De Pijp – suddenly Noord became an option. Yet the feeling of distance remains, even if only mentally. The discussion about bridges, ferries, and connections is one that has been going on for decades, and therein lies something beautiful: Noord does not have to resemble the center to be important. It is allowed to be different. But the city can no longer imagine Amsterdam without Noord.
One thing is certain: the area is developing rapidly. With new residential areas, amenities, restaurants, and an increasing number of businesses setting up shop, Noord is increasingly becoming the heart of the city—not geographically, but economically and culturally. And although prices are rising, they are still more affordable than in the rest of Amsterdam. Those who get in now will have a front-row seat to what may be the most exciting chapter in the city's recent history.
In this neighborhood guide, we take you on a tour of a selection of places that make Noord what it is: from beloved lunch spots to hidden workspaces, from innovative restaurants to old icons. Because Noord is not a single story, but a polyphonic choir. And it sings ever louder.
