De Generaal
The name De Generaal takes its inspiration from the street’s namesake, Lieutenant Colonel David Hendrik Chassé (1765–1849) of the Batavian Legion. The apartment spans approximately 138 m², complemented by a garden house of about 20 m² and an expansive private garden of no less than 150 m², including terrace and garden house. The exceptional depth of the garden and the adjoining green courtyards of Van Speijkstraat lend the home a rare sense of space and serenity.Situated on a quiet, tree-lined street in the vibrant Baarsjes district near Oud-West, this apartment combines tranquillity with the energy of city life. Within walking distance are De Hallen, the Ten Katemarkt, the Jordaan and three of Amsterdam’s city parks: Erasmuspark, Rembrandtpark and Vondelpark. The neighbourhood also offers a wide variety of restaurants, cafés, sunny terraces and two primary schools close by.
Architecture
On a quiet street at the intersection of Oud-West and De Baarsjes stands a residential block bearing the unmistakable signature of architect Zietsma. Built in 1922, it is deeply rooted in the expressive language of the Amsterdam School. The façades reveal a rich rhythm and refinement: horizontal lines formed by protruding brickwork, rounded corners with elegant balconies, and a subtle interplay of colours where deep brown and sandstone shades alternate in balance. The entrance at number 103 is a study in understated expression: a dark-framed portal, a herringbone brick ceiling, and above the door, a window with fine muntin divisions. Every element feels solid, intentional and welcoming. The architecture forms part of a streetscape where robust ecclesiastical buildings, such as the Chassé Church, alternate with early twentieth-century residential blocks. It is a neighbourhood where the original character remains intact and the city’s scale still feels human.
The building itself is an ode to craftsmanship. Every detail, from the lintels to the intricate brick patterns, reflects a level of artistry rarely seen today. Living here means inhabiting a piece of Amsterdam’s architectural history, a home with true identity, where time has left its mark without diminishing its quality.
Wining and dining
The apartment features a clear, well-balanced layout with natural light streaming in from both the street and garden sides. The living room at the front faces east, while at the rear it flows seamlessly onto the terrace and west-facing garden. The nearly three-metre ceiling height enhances the sense of openness, and a freestanding wood-burning stove forms a functional focal point within the living space. The kitchen, located at the garden side, is designed for both cooking and gathering. A long dark stone countertop, a five-burner gas stove with oven, and ample lower and upper cabinetry provide generous workspace and storage. Open shelving offers room for ceramics and kitchen essentials, while the dining area easily accommodates a long table.
Between the kitchen and the entrance hall are two large built-in storage cupboards. The hallway also includes a separate toilet and a cloak area. At the front of the apartment, adjacent to the hall, is a room currently used as a home office.
Rest and Refresh
The lower ground floor is accessed via a fixed staircase from the central hall and features a ceiling height of over two metres. The layout comprises three bedrooms and a spacious bathroom, arranged around a central corridor that also includes a utility and laundry area. The largest bedroom is located at the rear and offers ample space for a double bed, wardrobe and a comfortable sitting area. Two tall windows allow natural light to filter in, while a wide wall fitted with bespoke bookshelves accentuates the length of the room. Adjacent to this space is a separate walk-in closet. The two additional bedrooms are of practical size and well suited as children’s rooms, guest bedrooms or home offices. Both receive daylight through horizontal windows facing the street and retain their original exposed ceiling beams, adding character to the space. The bathroom is fully tiled in a light palette and features underfloor heating. It is equipped with a bathtub, a separate shower, wall-mounted toilet and a double washbasin with mirrored wall, a bright and comfortable space designed for everyday use.
Garden and Garden House
The back garden, measuring approximately 150 m², is exceptionally spacious by urban standards. Facing west, it enjoys direct sunlight from late morning until early evening (roughly 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., depending on the season). The first section of the garden functions as a terrace, directly adjoining the dining area and accessible through double French doors. Further back, the garden transitions into a lower level with lush planting, a mix of perennials, various rose species, and mature trees that create a natural green buffer toward the neighbouring gardens. At the rear stands a contemporary garden house, finished with vertical timber cladding. This multifunctional space is equipped with a pantry, separate shower, and toilet. Overhead skylights provide natural illumination, while double doors open onto the terrace area at the front, seamlessly linking the interior with the garden. In addition, a freestanding greenhouse constructed from black steel profiles and glass offers space for cultivating plants or serves as a sheltered seating area. The greenhouse forms a striking architectural element that blends beautifully with the surrounding greenery. The garden is fully enclosed and offers complete privacy, enhanced by mature vegetation and the open setting bordering other deep gardens, a rare combination that brings tranquility and seclusion to city living.
