Sigma Loft
Living on Cruquius Island means living in a place where the history of Amsterdam is still palpable. What was once an area of ports and industry is now a lively urban district with distinctive architecture and a dynamic mix of living and working. Due to its origins as a port, the island is rich in water, with quays, canals, and places where life takes place both on and around the water. This apartment is located in the former SIGMA paint factory, a striking building that keeps the industrial past visible within the new development of Cruquius. The character of the factory has been carefully preserved and combined with contemporary living comfort. The high ceilings, large windows, and open layout give the home a distinct loft feel.
What makes this place special is the balance between history and modernity. Here, you live in a building with a story, but with all the comforts of today. Light, space, and a flexible layout. An apartment for those who want to live in an urban neighborhood that is still evolving, with water and architecture as its defining features.

Five new residential complexes have been built around two existing buildings on the bend leading to the Cruquius site. The Sigma factory building, the largest old building in the area, has been preserved to keep history visible in the transformation of this industrial environment. The monument conservation authorities advocated for a dominant position for the main building, which meant that it had to remain visible as the most important volume upon entering Cruquius. To achieve this, an extra floor was added on top of the factory. The original supporting structure was already prepared for this, allowing this promise to be fulfilled. In addition, the paint factory behind the factory, despite its poor condition, has been preserved because of its significance for the scale and atmosphere of the area. This has created a coherent whole in which the functional architecture of the factory has influenced the surrounding buildings.
Inside, the original height of more than 3 meters creates a surprising sense of space and air. The high facades bring the diffuse light deep inside.
The living room extends across almost the entire length of the apartment. Upon entering, the space unfolds lengthwise, with a direct line of sight to the large windows at the front. This long line of sight creates a natural layout, with working and cooking areas extending from each other, but each retaining its own space. The ceiling height of over three meters enhances the feeling of space, while the cast floor connects all functions as one continuous surface. Daylight floods in generously at the front and, thanks to the length, also reaches the heart of the home. The open kitchen has a sleek and practical design. The Miele induction hob is integrated into the worktop and there is plenty of cupboard space. A generous storage cupboard provides extra storage space, keeping everything calm and tidy. The dining table is centrally located in the room and forms the link between the kitchen and the sitting area. An open workspace has now been created between the living room and bedroom; this can easily be closed off to create a second bedroom. The depth of the living room makes this possible without losing the light or logic of the layout.
The bedroom is directly connected to the loggia. French doors open onto the sheltered space, allowing daylight to flood in. The high ceilings and continuous cast floor also create a sense of calm and cohesion here. The bedroom has a bright and functional layout, with enough space for a full-size bed and closet space without feeling compact. The connection with the outside means that you can see the light change here in the morning. The loggia acts as an extension of the bedroom and adds an extra dimension to its use. The bathroom is en suite and has a sleek, timeless design. White wall tiles up to ceiling height enhance the feeling of height and light. The walk-in shower is generously sized and fitted with a minimalist glass partition. The toilet is separately accessible from the hall, which makes the layout logical and practical for everyday use and guests. Together, the bedroom and bathroom form a peaceful, bright zone within the apartment. Functionally designed, with attention to light, proportions, and comfort.
Although there is no traditional outdoor space, the apartment has a loggia that is an integral part of the home. It is located at the front and is accessible from both the living room and the bedroom. The accordion windows can be opened completely, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. On mild days, the loggia becomes an Immediately of the living space. With the windows closed, it is a sheltered place where you can sit comfortably, while still enjoying light and views. The high window frames and continuous ceiling ensure that the characteristic height of the building is also present here. The view focuses on the KRUX Brouwwerf and the surrounding architecture of the Cruquius site. You look out over an area where old and new meet, with a view of the urban dynamics and at the same time enough distance to experience peace and quiet. No garden classic balcony, but an outdoor room that can be used all year round and is Immediately to the living space inside.
Cruquiuseiland has been transformed into a vibrant residential and working area where modern architecture alternates with restored historic buildings. Various creative companies from the fashion, interior design, architecture, and media industries have established themselves here.
The Entrepothaven, located between Cruquiuseiland and Borneo Island, is home to restaurants and cafés such as The Harbour Club Amsterdam Oost and Cruquius Local. In the nearby Flevopark, Proeflokaal 't Nieuwe Diep is a hidden hotspot, with a terrace on the Nieuwe Diep and surrounded by greenery.
accessibility
Cruquiusweg is located in the eastern port area, on the border between the city and the water, but never far from the center. You can reach the A10 ring road within minutes via exit S108, putting both the Zuidas and IJburgseplein within easy reach.
Tram line 3 takes you right across the city: via De Pijp to Oud-West and on to Frederik Hendrikbuurt. Bus lines 22, 37, and 65 connect the area with Muiderpoort, Amstel, Sloterdijk, and Station Noord, ideal for commuters. Muiderpoort station is also less than a ten-minute bike ride away.
The neighborhood itself is quiet and well-organized, with wide streets and plenty of space for cyclists and pedestrians. Parking is available in the underground garage of an adjacent building, keeping the streets free of cars. This allows the Cruquius area to remain what it wants to be: urban, but open.
Parking space
The apartment has a private parking space, which is offered separately for €60,000 ( purchaser's costs). The enclosed parking garage is located nearby in the basement of the adjacent building (2PEER) and is equipped with a remote-controlled electric gate. When you arrive home, the doors open and you can drive right in. It is not possible to apply for a parking permit for this address. In addition, the apartment has a separate storage room of approximately 5 m².
We were immediately enthusiastic when we were able to acquire this beautiful apartment in the former Sigma paint factory. Together with our interior designer, we created a light, loft-like atmosphere in which we Immediately felt Immediately . The spacious kitchen is a place where we enjoy long evenings dining with friends. Every day, we enjoy the panoramic view. From the apartment, we look out onto the lively Krux, where we often stop for a drink ourselves. The tall windows on the north side give the apartment a real studio atmosphere thanks to the soft, diffused light that is present throughout the day. The location is ideal: within a short walk, we are in the Indische Buurt, Watergraafsmeer, or the Oostelijk Havengebied. We also greatly appreciate the immediate surroundings, with its beautiful gardens, cozy benches, and views of the water. What we will perhaps miss most are our lovely neighbors and, of course, life in Amsterdam. We were unable to transform the loggia into a garden room, but it offers an excellent basis for the new owners to create their own little paradise here.
