I’ve spent most of my life here in Amsterdam in this street, in this very house. Living and working under one roof was ideal for me; just sixteen steps of commuting. The Elandsgracht neighbourhood feels like a small village a creative and cosmopolitan one. Daily groceries just around the corner, wonderful shops in the Nine Streets, lovely restaurants, and some of the city’s finest art galleries right on your doorstep.

What makes this house truly special is the sense of calm, right in the heart of the city. The moment you close the door behind you, everything fades the traffic, the pace, the noise. What remains is a bright, peaceful space: a world of its own, in a unique setting on one of Amsterdam’s most charming streets. The neighbourhood feels like a village within the city rich in history, art, beautiful shops and warm, welcoming people. What I’ve always appreciated is the easy contact with neighbours and gallery owners a quick chat is always just around the corner. It gives life here a sense of familiarity and ease.

What makes this house so special are its self-contained spaces, its characterful period rooms, and the deep rear garden a green oasis with sunlight at every hour of the day. Despite its central location, it’s remarkably peaceful here. That’s thanks to the Prinsengracht, which separates us from the Jordaan, and the Herengracht, which buffers the lively city centre around Dam Square and Central Station.

We once fell for the house’s old, bold, and monumental character it truly stands its ground. What makes Prinseneiland so special is its sense of seclusion; a small oasis tucked within the buzz of the historic city centre. The moment you cross the railway line, a quiet calm settles over you yet within minutes, you’re right back in the vibrant heart of Amsterdam.

What makes it so special to me is the unique combination: the vibrancy of the city at the front, and at the back, a surprisingly quiet, green oasis. The deep garden is a place where you can completely forget the city with only birdsong, church bells, and the chimes of the Westerkerk reminding you of where you are.
