Plantage Lepellaan 2 is a distinctive residence dating from 1853 and designated as a municipal monument. The property is located within the nationally protected cityscape “17th-Century Canal Belt of Amsterdam within the Singelgracht,” in a quiet and historic spot in the Plantage neighborhood. The architecture is understated and classical in design. The white-plastered facade, tall windows with dark frames, natural stone sills, and the distinct vertical articulation give the building a stately yet modest appearance. The slate-roofed gable with dormer windows reinforces the historic facade and creates a recognizable rhythm along the street front. The residence is part of a series of buildings on Lepellaan designed in the second half of the nineteenth century by architect W.J. van Berkum. Construction drawings from 1865 show that the houses were originally intended to have two front doors, presumably as ground-floor and upper-floor dwellings. Shortly thereafter, the plans were revised: in 1866, Van Berkum offered the residences rent as five-room dwellings.
In 2005, the building was renovated, preserving its historic character.

What makes this house so special is its blend of history, comfort, and charm. The building dates back to the 1850s and is a municipal landmark, yet it is equipped with all modern conveniences. Inside, it feels like a warm cocoon: peaceful, cozy, and full of character.
My favorite spot is the garden. Especially in the morning, with a cup of coffee on the bench in the sun, it feels like a little moment of happiness right in the middle of the city.
I’m also going to miss the neighborhood terribly. De Plantage feels safe and familiar; people greet each other on the street, and the tranquility is special. The only sounds you hear sometimes come from Artis in the distance or from the parakeets flying through the neighborhood. That gives this place a very unique character.
De Plantage itself is a lovely spot to have lunch or grab a bite to eat. Outside, there are tables near the large birdcage and the flamingos, where you can easily find a spot to sit. And every now and then, you’ll bump into some well-known locals, which adds even more character to the area.
What I’ll miss most in the end are the morning walks with the dog: past Artis, through the quiet streets, and along the canals. Those daily walks may have been simple, but that’s exactly what made them unforgettable.
