Built in 1974, but designed with an eye for the historic surroundings. Classic roof lines, a facade with moldings, and divided windows connect to the building traditions of Zaan and Waterland. The baked roof tiles, wooden dormer with curved pediment, and refined detailing give the house a stately, timeless appearance.
This is not a historicizing reconstruction, but a home that honors the style of Monnickendam in a contemporary interpretation.

Haringburgwal 1 combines freedom, accessibility, and character: a detached house with parking on its own grounds, in the middle of one of the most beautiful historic city centers in the Netherlands.
The decision to buy the house 23 years ago was made in five minutes. What makes the house special is its authenticity, the rural atmosphere it exudes, the lovely garden, the cosiness of the harbour and yet an enclave where you can be completely yourself, in the middle of the historic, beautiful and lively Monnickendam. Amsterdam city centre, 13 km away, was also very important to us.
Furthermore, there is the rustic, beautiful nature (including the nearby Hemmelandpark with its beautiful beaches) and the sailboat, a mooring practically on the doorstep. The house itself was originally part of the smokehouse museum. What is now the large kitchen was previously the museum's movie theater.
The house originally consisted of many small rooms, most of which we knocked through, but we kept the warm atmosphere
Initially, the house consisted of many small Rooms , most Rooms we knocked through, but the warm atmosphere
that the house already had has been well preserved. With so many places to sit, you can choose the spot that best suits your mood
. The conservatory shows off the garden to its best advantage, and upstairs we have created a work/study area and bedroom with a large dormer window in the attic, offering a magnificent view of the Gouwzee.
Downstairs, next to the living room, there is a large kitchen and an adjoining practice room. The practice room has its own entrance.
We have enjoyed living here and are sad to say goodbye. We are moving back to Amsterdam, where our children and grandchildren are closer, and now that we have more time, the dynamics of the (big) city appeal to us again. It was not an easy decision; perhaps it is also curiosity. How many lives can you live?
Depending on the season, we use different rooms in the house. We spend most of our time in the kitchen, but we also often sit in the conservatory or the attic room with a view of the Gouwzee, next to the living room. The old town is a tourist area with water and cycling, which creates a bit of a holiday feeling almost all year round. The historic streets around the harbor have an atmosphere where time seems to have stood still.
There are nice terraces and places to eat. The best are a small restaurant called Zwarthoed. This is very well known. The restaurant Joon is also a reasonably good restaurant. On the Haringburgwal there is a good pizza restaurant called Lievito and there is a good tapas restaurant called El Puerto. There is an exceptionally nice beach pavilion, Strandvier, and there is a cozy brown pub, 1614. There are several nice places to have lunch at the old harbor. Close to the lock, there is a good delicatessen shop called Zuid. On Saturdays, there is a fairly good market. In the main street, there is a good vintage fashion store. Vintage Brand. What we will miss most is the feeling of space, the light, the comfort of a large, atmospheric house, the presence of nature, especially the water, and the personal atmosphere between people.
