In the final years of the twentieth century, the Eastern Docklands rapidly transformed from an area of disused warehouses, quays, and cranes into a modern metropolitan residential district. On the edge of this area stand the two residential buildings ‘My Side’, which together house 106 apartments, designed by Architekten Cie (1995). The north side of the buildings faces the IJ river and the IJ harbor, while the south side faces the old city. The difference in orientation is reflected in the appearance of the buildings. The front facing the water has a monumental character. Large elements and 'hard' materials such as corrugated iron, glass, and plasterwork were used. The apartments on the top floor and the front protrude slightly and frame the whole. The south side on the Oostelijke Handelskade is much more differentiated and lively in nature. This effect is achieved by terraces, balconies, and the staggered wooden facades of the top floor, which give a jagged appearance.
To make the most of the unique location between the water and the city, the residences have residences open layout. The first floor features studio apartments with a mezzanine, above which are six floors of maisonettes.
