In 1904, J.B. Janus had four buildings constructed, each consisting of a ground floor and upper floor. At that time, this section of Van Baerlestraat was still called Roelof Hartstraat. The buildings were constructed in the Neo-Renaissance style, which was popular at the time, a style period in which the Dutch Renaissance of the 16th century was reinterpreted. Characteristic of the Neo-Renaissance are the horizontal layers of natural stone between the brickwork and the stepped gables, which are almost indistinguishable from those of the original Renaissance. The historical sentiment was now only reinforced by even more exuberant decorations. The same was true for shops, which wanted to stand out in order to attract customers. Typical of this period are the elegant balconies, beautiful front doors, and pointed dormer windows at the front.
