The LIGHTFACTORY - Living in a spacious loft on the waterfront with a view of the Schinkel.
Design vision
The Sloterkade was once the edge of the village of Sloten. Around 1900, Sloten was annexed by the Local authority . A few small dike houses and nineteenth-century factory buildings still remind us of this period.
One of these factory buildings was the Chemical Laundry and Dye Works. Built in 1898, this building and the water tower constructed to supply it with water have changed function over the years. From an AEG warehouse to, most recently, a warehouse/factory for indoor lamps. The current 'Lightfactory' owes its name to this last user.
guided tour
Spacious living in a building with history and contemporary comfort (elevator). The high and light loft apartment has an open structure but offers sufficient privacy thanks to its layout and different floor levels. The spacious living room, located on the waterfront, has high windows and is fitted with light oak parquet flooring. The walls, approximately 3.75 m high, offer plenty of space for large paintings and art. The apartment is well insulated, creating an oasis of tranquility; when the windows are closed, you cannot hear any noise from outside or from neighbors. It is wonderful to relax in the morning when the sun shines into the living room until noon. In the summer, you can enjoy the famous "standing mast route" at the front of the building.
The open kitchen in the middle of the apartment is approximately 1.50 m higher than the front and back rooms. The kitchen island is the central place in the house to meet for a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, and a snack.
On the same floor as the kitchen are the bathroom, separate toilet, and storage room (washer/dryer combo and pantry).
The mezzanine is accessible from the kitchen and offers the perfect space to create a spacious home office.
The spacious bedroom is located at the rear and has sliding doors to the loggia, which is light and sunny thanks to the apartment's corner location. From noon until evening, you can enjoy the sun on the loggia. By opening the tall sliding glass doors, you can incorporate the outdoor space into the spacious bedroom and living area. Due to its corner location, this apartment is more than a meter wider than the other apartments.
The walk-in closet and an extra storage room are accessible from the bedroom. Both the bedroom and the walk-in closet have new, light oak laminate flooring. The bedroom is 6.20 m wide and has a ceiling height of over 3.75 m.
The outdoor space
The very high, open loggia of approx. 9m² faces west and is the ideal place to enjoy the sun and tranquility from midday until the sun sets in the evening. The rear facade has recently been completely renovated and insulated by the homeowners' association and fitted with Double glazed.

From an AEG warehouse to, most recently, a warehouse/factory for indoor lamps. The current 'Lightfactory' owes its name to this last user.
Initially, the old factory with its water tower was to make way for New build in 1995 the Oud-Zuid district council decided to hold a design competition, in which the original building would have to be preserved alongside a new section. Of the five entries, the design by Köther, Salman, and Koedijk Architects won. Their design preserved the old factory and ingeniously incorporated it into a new building complex. The variety of housing types in their design was also appealing. The partially restored and partially newly built complex was completed at the end of 1999.
The Lightfactory has been awarded an architecture prize. Following renovation in 1999, many authentic details have been preserved, such as the water tower, the beautiful entrance with original granite floors and stairs, and the industrial elevator.
