On the corner of Singel and Driekoningenstraat stands a distinctive national monument in the austere Amsterdam School style, designed by architect A.D.N. van Gendt on behalf of securities firm Praetorius & Zoon. In the early twentieth century, it housed several prominent financial institutions, including bankers De Kock & Uyt den Bogaarden and the insurance company of O.W.J. Schlencker. The name 'Drie Koningen' (Three Kings), subtly applied to the facade, refers to the adjacent street.
The building is characterized by a five-story structure with an attic, a natural stone plinth, and a brick facade with careful masonry. The plinth features expressive ornaments and sculptures, including a facade sculpture of the three kings under the star of Bethlehem. Other symbolism is incorporated in four natural stone reliefs depicting an esculapian staff, a salamander, pelicans, and seahorses—references to trade, healthcare, and maritime wealth. The façade is finished with dentil masonry and subtle detailing. On the corner, high above the street, stands an elegant flagpole holder – now without a pole – as a silent reminder of the original silhouette.
In 1996–1997, the building underwent careful redevelopment into a residential ensemble with twenty-nine luxury apartments. Under the direction of the architectural firm Dik Smeding, the building was adapted to a new purpose, while retaining its architectural essence. The basement was partially hollowed out to create an indoor parking garage, with a steel structure replacing the original columns. The entrance to this garage is subtly integrated next to the facade image of the three kings.
Access via a stylish staircase or elevator. The entrance opens onto a bright living room with a sitting area and a raised section, perfect as a workspace or guest room. French doors from the living room provide Immediately to the Roof terrace.
The kitchen is finished in matte white, with a natural stone countertop and high-quality built-in appliances from Quooker and BORA, among others. The layout offers enough space for a dining table, allowing cooking and dining to form a natural unity.
Throughout the home, there is tasteful herringbone parquet flooring, which refines and connects the spatial experience.
The bedroom is spacious, featuring charming skylights and comfortable air conditioning. The bathroom is luxuriously designed with a walk-in shower, freestanding bathtub, sink, and toilet.
The raised area in the living room is multifunctional and can serve as a guest room or studio.
The roof garden forms the heart of this home. A sunny south-facing terrace with views over the monumental roofs of the city center. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a Provençal courtyard—an oasis of calm in the middle of Amsterdam.
Wellness at home
The basement houses a communal wellness area with a swimming pool and sauna. This is a rare amenity that contributes to the exceptional living comfort of De Drie Koningen.
