Neighborhood guide

Boot camp, picnics, wading in the water, or simply strolling along the stately avenues of Vondelpark. Here lies the green heart of Amsterdam, where residents, artists, students, and families naturally come together, and differences in background or pace of life seem to fade away. On sunny days, the terrace of the Neo-Renaissance Vondelpark Pavilion—now known as Park Zuid—is a beloved spot for lunch, a late drink, or dinner amidst the greenery.
Roemer Visscherstraat is tucked away between the elegance of Oud-West and the tranquility of Vondelpark. The street is part of a distinctive enclave featuring historic buildings, wide sidewalks, and an almost Parisian atmosphere. Architecture and city life come together here in a natural way. The immediate surroundings are characterized by well-built, spacious residences the late nineteenth century, with rich facade details, high ceilings, and a strong connection to the neighborhood’s greenery.
De Overtoom serves as the lively artery leading to the city center, while the Helmersbuurt offers a refined selection of coffee bars, delicatessens, caterers, and artisan specialty shops. For culture and gastronomy, the Museum Quarter, the Concertgebouw neighborhood, and the Negen Straatjes are just a short distance away. At the same time, the area retains a quiet and residential atmosphere, where everything is within walking or cycling distance. A neighborhood where urban dynamism, architectural quality, and everyday elegance are in balance.

What the owners will miss

What makes this house (RV13) special
RV13 has recently undergone a major renovation in two phases: the lower three floors in 2018/19, and again in 2021/22 when the upper two floors were added. As of 2022, RV13 is now a single-family home! In short: no homeowners’ association, complete interior design from a single source, central home automation, and an elevator and staircase connecting the five floors. The exterior facade is stylishly illuminated. The house, built in 1895, exudes both the elegance of contemporary design and a warm, classic atmosphere. The location is fantastic; the garden borders Vondelpark, the city center and the canal belt are easily accessible on foot, the Museum Quarter and the Concertgebouw are just around the corner, and daily groceries can be done within a 3-minute walk. The street is also closed to traffic from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM, so we enjoy a soothing tranquility here at all times. The house is wonderfully spacious; our children and grandchildren regularly stay with us in Amsterdam, and our friends also enjoy staying at RV13 from time to time! The three parking spaces in a private garage with chargers, located about a 3-minute walk from the house, ensure there’s always a spot to park and charge your car—which is exceptional in Amsterdam.

Where in the house do you like to spend your time the most
We spend most of our time on the ground floor in the open kitchen-dining area and the TV room. And, of course, in the master bedroom on the first floor, which also houses Noëlle’s cozy study. Paul spends a lot of time in his spacious office in the attic, which is also furnished as a second living room. The fourth floor houses the linen closet, guest room, and gym, which Paul uses several times a week. And in the winter, we love to spend time in front of the fireplace in the living room on the ground floor.

What makes the neighborhood so special
Roemer Visscherstraat, with its famous townhouses, is characterized by Amsterdam’s renowned classical architecture and is part of Oud-West. The street runs parallel to the famous P.C. Hooftstraat, ends at Vondelpark, and is a 5-minute walk from Leidseplein and the canal belt. A distinctive feature of this street is that many houses are no longer divided and are occupied by a single family. The residents of the street (mainly families) form a diverse community: professional soccer players, professional DJs, lawyers, investors, to name just a few. Some have lived here their entire lives and are therefore deeply committed to the street and the neighborhood. The private homes are generally very well maintained. Vondelpark, the city’s green lung, forms the vibrant heart of our neighborhood. As soon as you enter the park, you feel the international atmosphere of Amsterdam and find yourself right in the middle of Amsterdam life. Culinary-wise, Oud-West is a colorful mix ranging from Michelin-starred restaurants to coffee shops, traditional pubs, and Surinamese grocery stores.

Shops and such
Our favorite bakery is Mijssen on Van Baerlestraat. They not only bake delicious bread but also pastries and the like, and you can get all kinds of sandwiches there. There are two AH supermarkets where we regularly go for our everyday groceries: across from the Concertgebouw and at the intersection of Overtoom and Constantijn Huijgens. The best butcher in Amsterdam is Serge on the corner of Overtoom and Bilderdijkstraat, with a fantastic fish shop right next door—Smit from Volendam. There’s a great little coffee shop on Overtoom near Constantijn Huijgens, and our favorite café is, of course, Welling near the Concertgebouw. All other delights are within easy reach: P.C. Hooftstraat is just around the corner, and of course the city center with all its fantastic bars and restaurants, with the brasserie at the Dylan Hotel deserving a special mention!

Missing
Especially the joys of Amsterdam: the bars, the restaurants, the museums, the Arena, and the Concertgebouw. That’s why we continue to live close to Amsterdam, just a 25-minute drive from downtown! The oasis of calm when you come home from the city, the intimate atmosphere, the comfort, the many friendly neighbors, and the welcoming atmosphere of the house.

Sama Sebo

Sama Sebo is an Indonesian restaurant in Amsterdam where time seems to have stood still. The interior has remained unchanged for years, as have the classic dishes on the menu. A visit to Sama Sebo is a journey back in time to the 1960s and 1970s, when Indonesian food was extremely popular in the Netherlands. The service is friendly and attentive, and the food is deliciously old-fashioned.

The Bab

The Korean restaurant The Bab has the authentic taste you would expect from a Korean restaurant, but without being too fancy. Owners Junghun Pyo and his wife Haksun (Sunny) Kim want people to feel at ease and enjoy casual Korean food. The first things that come to mind when you think of Korean food are bibimbap and fried chicken. Bibimbap contains rice, vegetables, and a raw egg. The fried chicken is prepared with a special Korean spice mix. Another popular dish you can order at The Bab is kimchi pancakes. These pancakes are filled with onion and kimchi, a fermented cabbage that is becoming increasingly popular in the West.

Coffee District

Owners Adil Loukane and Rosa Loukane started with a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop in a fashion store in the South. When the store closed its doors, Adil and Rosa seized their opportunity and decided to open their own coffee bar. They now have multiple locations. The coffee is made with a proprietary blend roasted by Lot Sixty One. They also offer sweets such as the now-famous cinnamon buns and banana bread.

Olives & More

The owners tasted delicious olives in many countries, but back in Amsterdam, they could hardly find them. That's why they now import directly from the farmer. It started with a few wooden barrels full of olives in a baker's cargo bike at a farmers market in Amsterdam. Olives & More now imports dozens of types of olives and olive oil from Italy, France, Spain, Greece and Portugal.

International Theater Amsterdam

The current building dates back to 1894. There used to be a theater here before, but it was mostly made of wood and was completely destroyed in a fire. The Internationaal Theater Amsterdam stands out because it juts out onto Leidseplein and has two towers and a spacious balcony. It has a classic auditorium and a modern auditorium. The staircases and chandeliers exude luxury, and it is easy to imagine that the audience used to consist mainly of the upper class. The theater mainly stages plays, but also hosts modern dance performances, lectures, and the Book Ball, among other events.
