Architecture
Richard Wagnerstraat 36 is part of a carefully composed block of four townhouses, which was built in 1931 under the direction of architect Albert Jan Kramer. Although little is known about the architect, his work is remarkable for its variety of competition and furniture designs, as well as the design of modern, comfortable homes for the wealthy class.
The block of houses was built in the Amsterdam School style, characterized by a robust and solid appearance. Typical of this style are the ladder windows, with windows divided by a series of muntins, and the high masonry plinth, made of a darker brick than the rest of the building. This architectural detail emphasizes the visual termination of the building block, in line with Berlage's urban planning principles, which prescribed extra height and refined details for angular building blocks.
During the renovation in 2019, an open layout was chosen, with a spacious kitchen at the heart of the home. The original character and modern elements such as glass and steel have been combined in a refined manner, with a finish in luxurious materials such as wood and natural stone.
