Wijzen Wind

A home that is logically designed, pleasant to live in, and distinguished by a balance between character and functionality.
The name Wijzen Wind refers to the artwork by Rolf van Engelen on the roof. This weather vane indicates the direction of the wind.

Design vision

The apartment is part of a characteristic building block from 1909, constructed in traditional style. The architecture of the building has been carefully preserved and is in keeping with the original urban character of the neighborhood.
Inside, the classic en-suite rooms are still recognizable and form an important structural element in the home. This original layout creates clear transitions between the different rooms and contributes to a balanced floor plan.
In 2015, the apartment was renovated and redesigned. A more open living concept was chosen, in line with contemporary use. The open kitchen is centrally located and directly connected to the living and dining area. The new layout enhances the feeling of space and light without detracting from the character of the home.

The original en-suite room is still recognizable in the spatial design and gives structure to the floor plan.
At the rear is the dining area with access to the second balcony. This gives the house outdoor space at both the front and rear, making it flexible for everyday use.

Pizza Project

It started with a pizza oven in their Rear garden. Every Friday, friends and family would line up outside their house to pick up a pizza. Now, Idske and Bas have two locations and a food truck. The secret? Letting the dough rise for 48 hours, which makes the crust light and airy and the pizza easier on the stomach. On weekends, they also serve sandwiches for lunch.

Gorgo Lunchroom

Gorgo was founded by Rifat Ergor and Berkutay Gunel, who left Istanbul together nine years ago and realized their dream of owning their own business in Amsterdam. Ergor is an architect, Gunel a creative director, and that creative vision is evident in everything: from the lighting in the space to the approach to the cuisine. Their lunchroom is inspired by Anatolia and they describe it as 'neither East nor West', a place where Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Armenian, and Greek influences come together. The menu features unique dishes such as toasted sandwiches with kavurma, tahini, and honey, sesame cookies filled with different sesame varieties, and drinks such as sumac lemonade and hoşaf kombucha.

Language Coffee

Taal Coffee is a coffee shop in Amsterdam-West, founded by Aleksandra Fedorova, who, after years of experience in the coffee world, wanted to create her own place centered around meeting people and paying attention. The name refers to the way taste and conversation connect people, and that idea is at the heart of the business. Here, it's all about carefully prepared espressos and filter coffee, with beans from small roasters and seasonal drinks. In addition to coffee, artisanal sweets are served in a space where locals like to stay and work or catch up.

Focacceria

The Italian Valeria Lucente finds the Italian restaurants in Amsterdam surprisingly good, but she does miss the flavors of home. Especially the focaccia from her region. This delicate flatbread, about two centimeters thick, is airy, greasy and as soft as a cloud. Unlike focaccia from other Italian regions, the Genovese version does not have a crispy, but a soft top. This is because the dough is brushed with olive oil, water and salt before baking. Especially in Genoa, focaccia is enjoyed at every meal and that is now possible in Amsterdam.

Bon Burger

Bon Burger is the new venture from Freek Kattenberg, known for Bottleshop in East Amsterdam, who brings together his love of burgers and natural wine with this concept. After years of successful burger pop-ups at Bottleshop, he decided it was time for a permanent location in West Amsterdam, on the popular deck on Jacob van Lennepkade. Kattenberg believes that doing something as simple as a hamburger well is a craft, and this is reflected in his focus on grilling technique and quality. The meat comes from Dutch dual-purpose cows, which first lived as dairy cows and are therefore more sustainable and flavorful. Bon Burger feels like a relaxed neighborhood spot where connoisseurs and curious passers-by come together for burgers, wine, and long evenings by the water.

Vitalente Café

Café Vita Lente was opened by Simon Witmaar, former owner of the Michelin-starred restaurant Coulisse, which he ran together with Tim van der Molen. With Vita Lente, he deliberately chose something completely different: not fine dining, but a café where spontaneity and freedom are central. Bas Holthuizen, who came over from Coulisse, is in charge of the kitchen, where he cooks in a more relaxed format with hot and cold dishes that you can order throughout the day. The concept revolves around the Italian idea of 'vita lenta', slow living, where you can walk in at any time from 11:30 a.m. and stay as long as you like.

All dishes look beautiful, without excessive fuss. The flavors also make themselves felt: honest, exciting and balanced. We quickly come across a winner on our menu: perfectly cooked brill with a fresh, salty oyster vinaigrette, cucumber ribbons, almond cream, a bite of fried fish skin and a nori sauce. Equally tantalizing: a perfect piece of lamb from the Big Green Egg, prepared with chorizo and served with two delicious sauces.’

Daalder (*)

Chef Huwaë's Indonesian roots and Asian influences spice up his inventiveness. He does not shy away from contrasting flavors. This chef's talent lies in the harmony he achieves with such combinations. Sometimes he is a little more classic, such as with a perfectly cooked langoustine served with a butter sauce enriched with champagne, orange, and Grand Marnier. Subtle, intense, explosive. Totally Dennis Huwaë. Daalder has 1 Michelin star.

Tamari Ya

Tamari Ya was founded by Imoto Yoshihisa and Yazawa Yuji, two Japanese entrepreneurs who started a farm-stay retreat in their village near Hiroshima and opened their first donut shop there in 2023 to revitalize their community. Out of their love for rice, they developed the komeko donut, made from rice flour from their own region and therefore naturally gluten-free. In Amsterdam, the donuts are handmade daily and fried in rice oil, without preservatives or colorants. The texture is different from what you are used to: less fluffy, more chewy, with varieties such as old fashioned or yeast-raised in flavors such as matcha, black sesame, and pistachio. The quiet, wood-dominated shop on Overtoom feels like a piece of the Japanese countryside in the city, where attention to food and the environment is central.
