The street was initially built up between 1927 and 1939 with luxury residential complexes, mainly in the style of the late Amsterdam School and Nieuwe Bouwen. The architect of Michelangelostraat was Jacques Bot, who combined architecture and politics at the time. Bot (Amsterdam, 1892) started working as a carpenter's apprentice at the age of 12. He took evening classes at secondary school for architecture and established himself as an architect in 1921. Before World War II, Bot built housing complexes in the Art Deco and Amsterdam School traditions in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, and Utrecht, among other places. He also designed stores for the Au Bon Marché chain. In response to rationalism, a group of architects emerged in the early 20th century who wanted to express themselves more artistically. This led to an expressionist architectural style: the Amsterdam School. Everything revolves around the external form, which is sturdy and solid. A characteristic feature are the ladder windows: windows divided by a large number of muntins.
