The house meets many requirements: it is located on its own land, has an energy label A, 2 bedrooms, a nice neighborhood, and is very tastefully decorated.
I helped the current owners with their search at the time, viewed many apartments, and they immediately felt that this apartment was right for them.

The building
In the 19th century, Amsterdam saw a series of architectural styles from the past being reinterpreted. The most popular architectural style in the second half of the 19th century was Neo-Renaissance, a style period in which the Dutch Renaissance of the 16th century was reinterpreted. Characteristic of Neo-Renaissance are the horizontal, natural stone layers between the brickwork and the stepped gables, which are almost indistinguishable from those of the Renaissance period. The historical sentiment was now only reinforced by even more exuberant use of decorations. The same was true for shops, which wanted to stand out in order to attract customers.
The building on Kazernestraat was renovated in 2012 with great attention to detail. Among other things, the foundation was repaired, new window frames with HR glass were installed, the roof was replaced, and the facade was restored. Thanks to this renovation, the apartment has been awarded a very good energy label, namely A.
tour
The immaculately maintained and tastefully decorated apartment is located on the second floor, accessible via the communal staircase.
Living & Cooking
The very bright living room is located at the front of the house and features an attractive French balcony overlooking the quiet street. The high ceilings with beautiful moldings give the whole room a very pleasant atmosphere.
The timeless open kitchen is in a corner layout with a sturdy granite worktop and various built-in appliances (dishwasher, combination microwave, refrigerator with freezer compartment, gas stove, and extractor hood).
The current owners have installed a beautiful white steel door between the living room and the hall, allowing the space to be closed off in style.
Bed & Beyond
There are two good bedrooms at the rear of the apartment. The master bedroom has a custom-made wardrobe. These wardrobes provide plenty of storage space and, thanks to their custom design, give the bedroom a calm look. The balcony can also be accessed from this room.
The second bedroom is currently used by the owners as a study, but would also be perfect as a nursery or children's room.
The modern and spacious bathroom has a walk-in shower, bathtub, and double sink. A separate toilet has been chosen.
The outdoor space
The apartment has a sheltered balcony at the rear, facing southwest. There is also a French balcony at the front. It's wonderful to open the doors in the living room on a sunny morning.
The apartment has been finished with an eye for detail, including beautiful wooden floors, steel doors, custom-made cabinets, etc. In other words: a wonderful place to come home to.

What the residents will miss
We fell in love with the light and the high ceilings of this apartment. It was also a perfect canvas for the interiors we wanted to feature within our home.
Both being creatives, we were able to style the interior with our favorite pieces we've collected over the years from living in London, New York, and collecting our favorite pieces from European antique collectors.
We have invested some key features in this apartment over the last few years – ones that we’ll miss dearly.
The first thing we did was to strip and re-varnish the floors, which made the apartment so much lighter, with a nicer tone of wood which sets it apart from many other Dutch apartments.
The terrazzo kitchen countertop is a beautiful feature – we worked with a local Dutch artisan to create the exact type of terrazzo we wanted to remind us of some of our favorite Italian kitchens in Puglia and Calabria. I love how thick it is and that it’s quite an unusual terrazzo you don’t see often.
I also work from home, so we decided to commission a bespoke cream steel door to be installed – to make sure the kitchen and living area felt separate from the bedroom and bathrooms. This time working with a local Dutch steel welder, we had this handmade – this door allows us to keep the light flowing through the apartment and having it cream meant it doesn’t look like the standard black steel door. It blends in perfectly when open or closed.
The kitchen sink is also a favorite bespoke feature, again working with a local craftsman on individually tiling it to give this checkerboard effect. I will be sad to leave this terrazzo and checkerboard sink. Something we will look to create in our new home.
Both the front and back balconies get morning sun and evening sun – something that was a deal breaker when looking for this place. I will miss the sun on my face with a drink in my hand.
And finally – our wonderful neighbors. The last few years with Covid have been a bit strange, and everyone is so kind and welcoming. They are the kind of neighbors you wish you have when you move to a new place.
