neighborhood guide
150 years ago, there were still farms on the site where Museumplein now stands. To create more living space, construction of the Museum Quarter began here at the start of the last century. The hand of architect Cuypers is recognizable, who, in addition to the first residences designed the Rijksmuseum in neo-Gothic style. This period is beautifully described in Publieke Werken (Public Works) by Thomas Rosenboom. Together with the Concertgebouw in neo-Renaissance style, this building defines the character of the neighborhood. With the arrival of the Van Gogh Museum, Gerrit Rietveld's contemporary architecture also made its entrance on Museumplein. The Concertgebouw neighborhood has an atmosphere and appearance that appeals to many. The range of restaurants, cafés, and shops is as eclectic as the architectural styles and fits in perfectly with the international allure of the neighborhood. Haute couture connoisseurs and buyers can visit the P.C. Hooftstraat, with fashion houses such as Burberry, Ba&sh, and Isabel Marant Étoile. The nice thing about this neighborhood is that the Center, De Pijp, and Amsterdam-Zuid—with the Vondelpark—are all within walking distance. This part of the Concertgebouw neighborhood has a slightly different dynamic and a different type of architecture, as it was built in the 1920s. The street is lighter. It is just out of the way, but still around the corner. Schools are within walking distance. The shops on Cornelis Schuytstraat and the farmers' market on Jacob Obrechtstraat provide for your basic needs.

The Perfect TownHouse No.12
Some residences we visit really surprise us. This house is one of them. We are familiar with the residences this street and have been pleasantly surprised by their layout before. This house was another such surprise. This house also has that pleasant, efficient layout and a timeless atmosphere: The Perfect TownHouse No. 12. We recognize in this house an ideal balance between size, functionality, and the tasteful way in which it has been renovated. It is not too big, but certainly does not feel too small either. This balance is partly due to the well-thought-out layout, smart features, and refined details. Not only does the interior feel right, but the exterior also has a good balance. The small Front garden practical and offers privacy. And the Rear garden really part of the living space—everything is in good proportion. Finally, the location on the street and in this part of the Concertgebouwkwartier is ideal. Central, yet sheltered from the hustle and bustle. The Perfect TownHouse No. 12 is another gem that we are proud to present.

The building at J.J. Viottastraat 12 is part of a building complex constructed in 1925 and designed by architect Gerrit Jan Rutgers. The middle houses have their own distinctive design, including a recessed veranda with a roof overhang and integrated planters. The masonry with bright red bricks and rough joints is striking. The ground floor has a recessed entrance with a robust door that has a round shape at the top. The door is painted in high-gloss monument green. The facades are decorated with sculptures by Hildo Krop. Another distinctive detail is the vertical flagpoles, each standing on a natural stone console. During their renovation, the previous owners also restored the original garden fence on the street side. The finish, the materials used, and the color scheme blend seamlessly. We were so happy when we found this house almost three years ago... It was ready to move into right away, completely renovated. We wanted a whole house so we wouldn't be bothered by neighbors above or below us. JJ Viottastraat is a beautiful, quiet, wide street, and we can always park right in front of the door! Thanks to the large garden, we were able to install a jacuzzi, where we have spent countless evenings chatting under the stars. Our sons have also enjoyed it with their friends. Speaking of the boys, we love that they have their own floor in the house. This way, everyone has their own space and privacy, and they can easily entertain their friends. We live a stone's throw from all the nice shops on Cornelis Schuytstraat and enjoy the almost village-like atmosphere there. We will certainly miss sitting around with an ice cream from the Frietboutique in our hands, where we always bump into familiar and friendly faces! We are now going on an adventure in the south of France, but we are taking warm memories of our house on JJ Viottastraat with us.
