Design vision

The project op Zuid project is an apartment complex, built in 2017, consisting of six floors and an underlying semi-underground parking garage in Amsterdam-Zuid. The building is described in the 2017-2018 Architecture Yearbook of the Netherlands Architecture Institute as one of the best residential buildings of the year.
During the urban planning explorations, a terraced building proved to be the best use of the available plot. NL Architects, known for the renowned Forum Groningen, designed the building with a stepped recessed facade on the south side. This allows the spacious outdoor areas to receive plenty of light and gives residents a wide view of the leafy Buitenveldert on the other side of the canal. All apartments have a sunny south-facing terrace. The terraces are decorated with hanging gardens, designed by landscape architect Jos van de Lindeloof. An automated system takes care of the watering, with planters incorporated into the floor of the terraces, making it appear as if the plants are growing Immediately the concrete. The vegetation acts as a green veil for the private spaces. The greenery is owned by the Homeowners' Association.
The architects aimed to create a spacious feel in the apartments. The freely positioned core with wet rooms, the kitchen, technical facilities, and storage rooms allows for long sightlines. Thanks to the large sliding glass doors, the deep and wide terraces function as an extension of the home.
