Le Grand Charme
This particular house, in this unique location on the street, is very special. As a municipal monument, it is a fine example of early 20th-century architecture. In this part of the street, the residences have Front garden, and this house in particular is conveniently located in relation to the greenery of the gardens in the block behind it. I was aware of this because we were previously involved in the sale of the house for one of the previous owners.
What surprised me, however, and what immediately struck me upon entering, is that the house now comes into its own. The previous residents had not succeeded in doing this. With a sense of history and great taste, the house has been renovated by the current owners. The colors and finishes appeal to the imagination, and I am enthusiastic about being able to assist with the sale of this house. In fact, this house is a hidden gem, where once inside, one discovers that it offers a surprising amount of privacy and unobstructed views. The floors have extra height, which lends the property a certain grandeur. The charm is reflected in the color schemes and beautiful wallpaper. With a total of 285 m² of living space, spread over four and a half floors and a basement, the house offers a sheltered west-facing garden and a sunny terrace for sun worshippers. Living here is a privilege.

History and architecture

Built between 1917 and 1920, this building is part of a block that continues around the corner on J.J. Viottastraat. It was designed in the early Amsterdam School style by architect Guillaume La Croix, commissioned by Heere van der Schaar. The building is a national monument and has been given a typical La Croix feature with the brick and wooden fences with decorations that separate the front gardens from the sidewalk. The divisions of the window sections are vertical, with the windows having a striking diamond-shaped layout. The roof is covered with red tiles and is cut. The facade has a parabolic-shaped bent top with decorative brickwork, in which a French balcony with an iron balustrade has been installed. The windows below have the same rich detailing and divisions. The front door has been restored and painted in monument green and white. The entrance is sturdy and original. The house is mirrored two by two with the neighboring property. This is continued throughout the block. It is a pity that the part of the block towards the corner of De Lairessestraat burned down and was unfortunately rebuilt with a less attractive building as a hotel. Number has largely retained its monumental atmosphere and details internally; the owners have succeeded in providing the house with modern amenities and comfort. The atmosphere is very pleasant and timeless. This starts with the stately entrance with vestibule, which gives access to a hall with staircase. This has an oak staircase as a defining feature. The interplay between authentic and modern can be seen throughout the house. It makes the house timeless and warm; it makes the house a family home like a warm bath. The kitchen in the family room is a striking central feature.Custom-made by John Vos Interieur, the kitchen is a focal point in life. Le Grand Charme, with its history and in its current state, is a unique family home.

Living

The ground floor offers a stately living room, characterized by high ceilings and a fireplace. Tall windows with beautiful stained glass at the top and white wooden shutters create a light and warm atmosphere. Built-in cupboards, incorporated into a beautiful en-suite wardrobe, subtly connect the living room to the kitchen at the rear. On the ground floor, there is another beautiful room, currently used as a study. This space is also ideal as a playroom for children. The entrance is impressive, partly due to the ceiling-high glass doors with stained glass. At the staircase, you can look up about ten meters and admire the stained glass skylight in the roof of the house. The 30 m² basement, not included in the Floor area, offers an extra room for storage, a freezer, and supplies. The basement also houses the central heating boiler and water heater.

The kitchen
The kitchenforms the centerpiece of this floor. Designed by John Vos Interieur, this custom-made kitchen features oak cabinets and drawers. The worktop and cooking island are stylishly finished with Calacatta Gold, with the pattern laid in an "open book" style and continuing on the sides of the island. The kitchen is fully equipped, including a Quooker, an induction hob with BORA extractor, and a wine refrigerator. The central cooking island invites family and friends to gather and forms the basis for culinary preparations. A generous wooden table, made from a three-meter-long piece of tree trunk, extends the kitchen and offers a beautiful view of the garden. French doors seamlessly connect the terrace and garden to the interior, creating a harmonious whole between indoors and outdoors, especially during summer evenings and the surrounding seasons. The en-suite cupboard in the kitchen offers extra functionality with a barista cupboard and a large, integrated refrigerator in the other cupboard. The warm, tasteful color scheme and thoughtful lighting plan enhance the atmosphere in the kitchen. This modern kitchen blends seamlessly with the monumental elements of the space, such as the paneling, the fireplace, and the ceiling, which give the space extra character.

Cafecito, a minimalist coffee shop, offers high-quality coffee from gleaming white machines. It is part of the Cafecito franchise, an Amsterdam-based coffee roastery that decided to open coffee shops to stimulate their own sales when sales to catering establishments stagnated during the pandemic. Cafecito already has three branches in Amsterdam and one in Rotterdam. Cafecito is a business reduced to its essence. You can drink top-quality coffee from white machines there.

The Concertgebouw

The Concertgebouw is one of the monumental buildings on Amsterdam's Museumplein. The building dates from 1888 and was completed in the style of Viennese classicism; although it also has features from the neo-Renaissance. The building was designed for classical concerts but also served as a pop venue for a while in the 60s and 70s. Famous stars who have performed here include Led Zeppelin and Aretha Franklin. Nowadays, almost a thousand concerts and other cultural activities take place in the Concertgebouw every year. There are also free lunch concerts for those on a smaller budget. For a visit to a lunch concert, it is best to check the website first. You can often reserve free tickets in advance there.
