In a quiet street, on the border of Oud-West and De Baarsjes, stands a block that bears the signature of architect Zietsma. Built in 1922, it is firmly rooted in the design language of the Amsterdam School. The facades are rich in rhythm and nuance: horizontal lines created by corbelled brickwork, rounded corners with elegant balconies, and a subtle interplay of brick colors in which deep brown and sandstone alternate. The porch at Number is an example of understated expression: a dark frame, a porch ceiling with herringbone brickwork, and above the door a window with small muntin bars. Everything about this entrance feels solid, well thought out, and inviting. The architecture is part of a streetscape in which sturdy church architecture, such as the Chassékerk, alternates with early twentieth-century apartment blocks. A neighborhood where the original character has been well preserved and where the scale of the city still feels human.
The apartment block itself is an ode to craftsmanship. The detailing, from the lintels to the brickwork, testifies to a level of craftsmanship that is rarely seen today. Here, you don't just live in a house, but within a chapter of Amsterdam's urban architectural history. A home with identity, in which time has left its mark without compromising on quality.
The house has a clear layout with natural light on both the street and garden sides. The living room at the front faces east, and at the rear, the living room is directly connected to the terrace and garden, which face west. The ceiling height of almost 3 meters in this space contributes to the feeling of openness. A freestanding wood-burning stove forms a functional centerpiece in the living area. The kitchen is located on the garden side and features a long worktop in dark natural stone, a five-burner gas stove with oven, and ample upper and lower cabinets for storage. Open shelves provide Location crockery and kitchen utensils. The dining area has enough space for a long table.
Between the kitchen and the entrance are two spacious storage cupboards. The hallway also has a separate toilet and cloakroom. At the front, adjacent to the hall, is a room that has been converted into a workspace.
The basement is accessible via a fixed staircase from the central hall and has a ceiling height of over two meters. The layout consists of three bedrooms a spacious bathroom, oriented around a central hallway with storage and laundry room. The largest bedroom is located at the rear and offers space for a double bed, closet space, and a sitting area. Two tall windows provide natural light. A wide wall with custom bookshelves emphasizes the length of the room. Adjacent is a closed walk-in closet. The two other bedrooms also of standard size and suitable as children's rooms, guest rooms, or studies, and are provided with daylight via horizontal windows on the street side. The Rooms functional in size and feature original ceiling beams. The bathroom is fully tiled in light colors and equipped with underfloor heating. The room has a bathtub, a separate shower cabin, a wall-mounted toilet, and a double sink with mirror wall.
The Rear garden approximately 150 m² and is exceptionally spacious by urban standards. The garden faces west and enjoys direct sunlight from late morning until early evening (approximately 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., depending on the season). The first part of the garden is laid out as a terrace, adjacent to the dining room and accessible via double French doors. Further back, the garden transitions into a deeper area with lush planting, consisting of perennials including various rose varieties and mature trees, which form a natural green buffer towards the surrounding gardens. At the back of the garden is a modern garden shed with vertical slatted wooden cladding. The garden shed is designed as a multifunctional space and equipped with a pantry, a separate shower, and toilet. Skylights provide extra daylight, and French doors connect the space to the terrace area at the front. There is also a freestanding greenhouse, constructed from black steel profiles and glass, which is suitable for growing plants or as an extra sheltered seating area. The greenhouse is an attractive visual element that blends in with the greenery of the garden. The garden is enclosed and offers complete privacy, partly due to the mature vegetation in combination with its unobstructed location adjacent to other deep gardens.

Five years ago, we moved into the house at Chasséstraat 103 with great enthusiasm. All our expectations and wishes have been exceeded. The house is a cozy and warm family home. There is plenty of space for children to play, explore, and develop safely. The spacious living room and separate kitchen make it a joy to entertain family and friends. In winter, thanks to the pleasant warmth and cozy atmosphere of the stove, and in summer, thanks to the French doors leading to the terrace, which extends the living room into the garden.
Of course, the deep and wide garden, which is unusual for Amsterdam, is our favorite place all year round. For barbecuing, playing, gardening, eating, and relaxing: everything is possible, and you can hardly hear any noise from the street. This makes it feel like a small, green oasis, which you can enjoy looking out over from the terrace, with sun until after 8 p.m. in the summer.
We had the garden house designed and built with great care, to use as a home office, and thanks to the bathroom and its own thermostat, it also serves as an ideal extra guest room, where our au pair has had her own space for the past year.
In the main house, the bedrooms the basement offer peace and quiet all year round, as it is always dark and quiet, and provides pleasant cooling on hot summer days. The bathroom is practical and the electric underfloor heating also makes it comfortable.
The street feels like a (small) village. Neighbors know each other and look out for each other. There are regular activities in the street, clean-up campaigns, or summer drinks around the Chassékerk. Two good schools (St Jan and Meidoorn), several after-school care centers, and daycare centers are within walking distance. Our children did judo and dance in the Chassékerk. So there's plenty to do!
Both Erasmus Park and Rembrandt Park are nearby, but even closer are playgrounds where the neighborhood comes together: Kortenaerplein, Meidoorn schoolyard, Kas Keerweer, Plan West, and Zimmerhoeve petting zoo.
The neighborhood offers a wonderful mix of shops: good Turkish bakeries, greengrocers, but also STACH, The Wine Spot, and of course Fort Negen for the most delicious sourdough bread.
The Ten Kate Market is full of top-notch stalls with delicious products. And in terms of restaurants? ThaiThaiPoppetje (cocktails & fusion Thai street food), Volare, Hannah's, Edita, Café Cook; there's plenty to do.
Chasséstraat has everything a family needs: good facilities for children, all the conveniences of the city center nearby, but enough space and tranquility to relax together. We look back fondly on our years in this special house.
