What the residents will miss
"We love the atmosphere in the house, the spaciousness of the rooms, the high ceilings, and the unobstructed view of the greenery at the back."

neighborhood guide Bredeweg is home to one of the most distinctive parts of Watergraafsmeer. This is a neighborhood where the pace of city life noticeably slows down. Wide avenues, mature trees, and stately houses define the streetscape here. The atmosphere is spacious and green, almost village-like, while the center of Amsterdam is only a few minutes away. Watergraafsmeer has its own history within the city. It was once a polder outside the city walls, later becoming a popular place for wealthy Amsterdammers to build their country estates. That spatial layout is still noticeable today. The streets are wide, the houses spacious, and there are a surprising number of green spaces between the buildings. Around the Bredeweg is a neighborhood where daily life and urban quality come together naturally. For your daily shopping, you can walk to the Middenweg, where traditional shops, specialty stores, and neighborhood favorites alternate. The atmosphere is personal and local; shopkeepers know their customers, and the pace is relaxed. The neighborhood also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine, and Oostpoort, with its varied range of shops and supermarkets, is within walking distance. Small cafés and restaurants are scattered throughout the neighborhood, often with terraces that disappear under the greenery in summer. Here you can drink coffee in the sun in the morning, meet up with friends for lunch, or end the day with a good glass of wine. What makes this neighborhood special is its proximity to greenery. Park Frankendael is a short distance away and forms the green heart of Watergraafsmeer. This historic park with its old avenues and open lawns is a popular place for a walk, a picnic, or a relaxing Sunday afternoon. In the monumental greenhouses of restaurant De Kas, they cook with ingredients that literally grow next door. Sports and recreation are also a natural part of everyday life here. Running along the Ringdijk, cycling through the polder, or spending an afternoon working out at one of the nearby clubs—you can do it all without leaving the neighborhood. De Watergraafsmeer thus combines two worlds: the peace and space of a green urban neighborhood with the dynamism of Amsterdam just a short distance away. It is a neighborhood where you can experience the city without constantly feeling its hustle and bustle. Living on Bredeweg means living in a part of Amsterdam that has found its own pace, spacious, green, and with a natural elegance.

Design vision

Bredeweg 16 H is part of a characteristic Amsterdam streetscape in which early 20th-century architecture is still clearly recognizable. The façade is characterized by warm brick, elegant masonry details, and a refined entrance with round arches and wrought iron accents. These classic elements give the building a stately and recognizable appearance on the street. Inside, the layout logically follows the structure of the building. The living area is located on the main floor, where the various living spaces are arranged in a row. The dining room forms the central point of the floor and connects the living room at the front with the kitchen at the rear. Large windows provide pleasant light and enhance the feeling of space. On the garden side, the house opens up to the outside. The veranda and conservatory form a natural transition between the interior and the deep Rear garden. This creates a clear relationship between living and outdoor space, with the greenery of the garden forming an extension of everyday life in the house. The bedrooms are located in the basement, quietly situated and logically grouped around the central hall and bathroom. The layout provides a clear separation between the living and sleeping areas, which makes the house pleasant for everyday use. The combination of classic architecture, a clear floor plan, and the direct connection to the garden gives this house a timeless character. A house in which the original architectural style and a practical layout come together to create a comfortable living environment.

Living and cooking

The entrance to the house is located on the main floor and is accessible from the street via a classic entrance with a vestibule, which leads to a spacious central hall. There is also a separate toilet in the hall.
The hall provides access to the impressive en suite room, which extends across the entire depth of the house. At the front is the spacious living room with a beautiful original fireplace and an exceptional ceiling height of approximately 3.66 meters, which creates a particularly spacious and light feeling. The large windows at the front provide plenty of natural daylight and emphasize the character of this beautiful space.
The en-suite layout with original sliding doors separates the living room from the dining room at the rear. This spacious dining room offers a pleasant place for long dinners and is directly connected to the garden. French doors provide access to the south-facing veranda, which is a wonderful place to sit. From the veranda, a staircase leads to the deep Rear garden.
The kitchen is located in the side room. It is currently simple in design but offers sufficient space for modernization or expansion into a spacious kitchen if desired.

The garden and the balcony

One of the absolute highlights of this property is the exceptionally deep Rear garden approximately 120 m², facing southwest. Thanks to its favorable location, the garden enjoys sunshine almost all day long. The garden offers plenty of space for multiple seating areas, a playground for children, or a green city garden.

What the owners will miss
When we first drove down Bredeweg 27 years ago and viewed the house, we immediately fell in love with it. That same feeling of joy has remained ever since. Because nothing had been done to the house for a very long time, many authentic features have been preserved, such as the marble slabs in the hall, the serving hatch in the kitchen, and the en suite room with sliding doors. We have modernized the house in two major renovations, while respecting the authentic features. About 10 years ago, it was designated a municipal monument. Fortunately, major structural work, such as foundation repairs, has now been completed. Over the years, we have Rear garden purchase a storage room adjacent to our Rear garden , so that there is also a back entrance.
It is a wonderful house to live in. When you close the front door, city life seems very far away. But if you want to seek out the hustle and bustle or buy fresh groceries, it is all within easy reach. We love the atmosphere in the house, the spacious rooms, the high ceilings, and the unobstructed view of the greenery at the back. Our children were born and raised here and now live independently. They look back on a very happy childhood, with playgrounds, Artis Zoo, good schools, sports clubs, and friends in the neighborhood.
It's surprising how much space is hidden behind the two windows and the door on the street side! The enclosed courtyards at the rear provide a feeling of security. We love to sit on our bench on the veranda on balmy summer evenings. In winter, we enjoy a drink by our fireplace.
We are currently looking for a home that better suits our stage of life. We want others to enjoy the same wonderful period we have had and are preparing Location the next generation.

Since 2001, De Kas has been growing around 300 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and fruit in its own gardens. Its motto is "harvested in the morning, on your plate in the afternoon." The gardens in Amsterdam and Beemster are the heart and soul of the restaurant and its menu. They dictate the seasons and surprise us time and time again.  De Kas works with fixed menus. At lunch, you can choose between a 3- or 4-course menu, and for dinner, a 5- or 6-course menu. There is no à la carte, and the menu always features surprising, creative dishes prepared by chefs Wim de Beer and Jos Timmer. They now hold a 'normal' Michelin star and a green Michelin star.

Susy's Café

Café Susy was founded by Kick van Doorn and Nicole Lieuw, who previously opened the successful Yusu and wanted to show their love for authentic flavors once again with Susy. The name playfully refers to Yusu, but the mission is serious: an all-day café with a menu that doesn't follow trends but remains faithful to traditional Brazilian-Surinamese dishes. The kitchen focuses on familiar flavors such as Surinamese chicken satay, bami with long beans, and escondidinho with chicken, cassava purée, and cheese from the oven. Despite the trendy interior with lots of steel and clean lines, the kitchen remains deliberately unpolished and pure. The atmosphere is lively and accessible, a place where you can just as easily drop in for coffee as for a hearty, home-cooked meal.

Think of dishes such as thinly sliced rib-eye with balsamic mayonnaise, pecorino, and capers, or different types of cabbage with a hollandaise sauce.

They don't call themselves a restaurant, but rather a place for culinary snacks.

As one of the few butchers in Amsterdam that slaughters its own meat, Slagerij de Wit is known for its quality, sausage-making, and culinary expertise. The meat is purchased Immediately the farmer, including local cows and Zuiderzee pigs. To ensure the quality of the products, an old-fashioned but sustainable way of working is maintained. Slagerij de Wit has been awarded for its ox sausage, which is a very tasty sandwich, but their homemade meatball sandwich is also highly recommended.

Olives & More

The owners tasted delicious olives in many countries, but back in Amsterdam, they could hardly find them. That's why they now import directly from the farmer. It started with a few wooden barrels full of olives in a baker's cargo bike at a farmers market in Amsterdam. Olives & More now imports dozens of types of olives and olive oil from Italy, France, Spain, Greece and Portugal.

The Kaaf

The men behind restaurant De Tros and its sister restaurant Turbo opened their own wine shop in East Amsterdam, called Wijnwinkel de Tros, also known as De Kaaf. Here, they bring the same love for natural wine that characterizes their restaurants to a place where you can just walk in and take something beautiful home with you. The shelves are filled with carefully selected bottles, from pet nat to champagne and from red to white and orange. For those who know De Tros, De Kaaf feels like a logical extension: the same taste, but in store form. In addition, the space can also be rented for tastings and private evenings, making De Kaaf as much a meeting place as a store.

Framer Framed

The project Framed project started in 2009 with the aim of challenging the position of transcultural art in Dutch art institutions. This was done through a traveling program visiting Dutch museums, where critical exhibition analyses were organized. Today, they have a permanent exhibition space, where changing contemporary art exhibitions are shown in combination with an in-depth interdisciplinary public program consisting of artist talks, lectures, film screenings, and performances.
