Anniek started out in the back office and worked her way up to become an RM/RT real estate agent. She now has over 20 years of experience, with a strong foundation in rentals, sales, and appraisals. Internationals are a key part of her experience. “I’ve helped hundreds of expats. What’s essential in this process is managing expectations. Amsterdam is an old city: compact residences, steep stairs—that takes some getting used to for many people. I really walk them through how life works here, from residences healthcare and schools. That’s how you build trust.” At the same time, she sees clear cultural differences: “Some nationalities communicate more indirectly; you have to really read between the lines.”
She sees clear trends in today’s housing market: “The rental market is highly regulated, which means many rental properties Sold . At the same time, buyers are increasingly looking for move-in-ready residences; renovations are expensive and complicated. You also see that many expats want to stay here because the quality of life is so good.”
What makes Amsterdam special to her? “I especially love the history and architecture—particularly the buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries.” She enjoys drawing inspiration from stories about the city, such as the NPO podcast *Het Verhaal van Nederland*, which also offers guided city walks. “Take the Royal Palace on Dam Square: originally built as a city hall, as a symbol of peace and trade. That says a lot about how Amsterdam came to be, as an international city.” In her free time, she prefers to be outdoors: going to the beach with her family, hiking, or strolling through the city in search of new spots.
