Het Binnenhof van Andreas
A spacious ground-floor residence forms part of the Andreas Ensemble, the site of the former Andreas Hospital. A carefully designed neighbourhood where tranquillity and urban living come together. What sets this home apart is the width of the floor plan and its dual orientation. At the rear, the garden adjoining the living enjoys abundant afternoon and evening sun. At the front lies a secluded garden, ideal for the morning. The interior layout is generous and well considered: an open and airy living, three bedrooms, and an adjoining room connected to the kitchen-living that can be arranged as desired, for example as a study, guest room, or playroom. There is a direct connection to greenery on both sides of the residence, as well as in the communal courtyard garden where children can play freely. The residence is quietly situated yet well connected, with Lelylaan station, the A10 ring road, and the city centre all within easy reach. Beneath the building is a private parking space in the secured garage. Just steps away lies the Rembrandtpark, an expansive city park ideal for running, walking, or a picnic on the grass. Several playgrounds are scattered throughout the park, while those who wish can continue on foot or by bicycle towards the Vondelpark or the Sloterplas.
Saskia van Uijlenburgkade 131 is part of the Andreas Ensemble, a residential district developed from 2006 onwards as a transitional area between the pre-war and post-war city. The urban design was created by Geurst & Schulze in collaboration with the Municipality of Amsterdam. The district connects the structure of the historic city with the scale of modern urban expansion. Construction began in 2008 and was completed in 2011. The ensemble comprises nine residential buildings with more than 500 dwellings. Within the contours of the plan lies a series of collective gardens, created on the roof of the underground parking garage. Designed by Landlab, these gardens are characterised by height differences, stairs, and terraces. The outdoor spaces are exclusively accessible to residents and serve as an extension of the adjoining homes. A consistent approach to materials has been applied throughout: the outer edges are constructed in sand-coloured brick, while lighter tones prevail within the inner area. This differentiation enhances the legibility of the plan and supports orientation within the district. The residence at number 131 is located on the ground floor. Positioned between two gardens, it offers an exceptional sense of light, tranquillity, and privacy within an urban context. The floor plan is wide, oriented towards both the morning and evening sun. Large windows, sliding doors, and a direct connection to greenery make the architectural concept tangible in daily life. Along the generous green strips on the southern and eastern sides of the neighbourhood, cycling routes lead towards the Vondelpark, Rembrandtpark, and Slotervaart. As part of the project, an additional bridge was constructed on Cornelis Lelylaan, spanning the waterway between Saskia van Uijlenburgkade and the Rembrandtpark. The street names in the neighbourhood are derived from figures in the life of 17th-century painter Rembrandt van Rijn.
The residence features a spacious living with a kitchen-dining area and a direct connection to the seating area. The layout is functional, offering a clear distinction between cooking and relaxing, without compromising the openness of the space. A subtle change in floor level marks the transition between the kitchen and the elevated seating area. The kitchen is designed in a sleek arrangement with ample workspace and storage. All essential built-in appliances are present and seamlessly integrated into the design. The dining area occupies a central position, with views of both gardens and access to the terrace at the front. The seating area adjoins the rear garden, where sliding doors open directly onto the terrace and create a natural connection between indoors and outdoors. Thanks to the wide windows and western orientation, the space feels bright and open, even on less sunny days. At the front of the residence, adjacent to the kitchen, lies an additional room with flexible possibilities. The space is suitable as a study or playroom and can also serve as a second living or TV room. A sliding door at the front subtly connects the space with the garden, where there is ample room for, for example, a dining table with chairs. The combination of an efficient layout, refined finishes, and excellent natural light makes this a place where cooking, dining, and living flow effortlessly into one another.
The residence offers three well-proportioned bedrooms, each with a calm and comfortable atmosphere. Large windows allow abundant natural light while maintaining a sense of privacy, enhanced by the surrounding greenery. The primary bedroom is positioned towards the quiet rear garden, with direct access to the terrace, creating a serene retreat within the home. The bathroom is designed with both functionality and refinement in mind. A combination of a walk-in shower, washbasin, and bathtub provides all essential comforts, while the chosen materials and finishes emphasise a timeless quality. A separate guest toilet is located in the hallway, complementing the layout. Together, the bedrooms and bathroom create a balanced private domain, harmoniously aligned with the living areas of the residence.
The residence features two outdoor spaces: a front garden facing east and a rear garden facing west. Both are directly connected to the interior, enhancing the liveability of the home. The front garden adjoins the multifunctional room at the front, where space has been created for a dining table with chairs, extending the daily use of this room. Bathed in the morning sun, it is an ideal spot for coffee or breakfast outdoors. A second, smaller section of the front garden adjoins the primary bedroom, bringing in additional light to the sleeping area. The rear garden connects to the seating area of the living and is oriented to the west. Here, abundant afternoon and evening sun create an inviting setting with space for a lounge set or garden table. Large sliding doors link indoors with outdoors, allowing for a seamless transition. In addition to the private outdoor spaces, residents have access to a communal courtyard garden, designed as an enclosed oasis. This green area is exclusively accessible to residents and provides a safe and quiet place for children to play. As part of the urban design, the courtyard garden adds an additional layer of use and experience.
