Het Van der Schaarhuys
Some residences stand out for their appearance, others for their location — and occasionally, everything comes together. De Lairessestraat 77 is such a place. A family home with character, grandeur and refinement. Where the classical exterior from 1917 transitions seamlessly into an interior reimagined with vision and a sense of style. What struck immediately upon entering was the effortless balance between spaciousness and intimacy — and above all, the central hall with its staircase. The living kitchen is open and inviting, while the sitting room with bay window offers seclusion and warmth. Every floor is laid out with care, featuring a principal bedroom that feels like a private retreat, and a top floor that lends itself effortlessly to living, working or welcoming guests. Even the lower ground level has been optimally utilised — offering light, comfort and a private bathroom. The garden and roof terrace complete the house. Sunlight, privacy and freedom — all in the heart of Amsterdam South. This, to me, is why this home speaks to the imagination. And with the opportunity to expand to a living area of approximately 400 square metres, it is not only a remarkable place to live today, but a future-proof investment for tomorrow. I present this home with conviction. A place to stay for a long time.

Architecture
Located on the broad and elegant De Lairessestraat in Amsterdam-Zuid, this generously proportioned family residence reveals a refined classical façade rich in detail. De Lairessestraat was named in 1912 after the 17th-century painter Gerard de Lairesse (1641–1711), who settled in Amsterdam in 1667 after moving from Liège. The row of buildings to which this house belongs dates from around 1917 and forms part of a designated conservation area. The residence benefits from an environmental permit for expansion, allowing the living area to be increased to approximately 400 square metres. The house was fully renovated in 2015 and tastefully restored to the design of interior architect Marina van Goor from MVGCA in 2022. A harmonious blend of original grandeur, contemporary luxury and refined finishes defines the interior experience. Constructed in 1917 using what was at the time a modern building method, concrete was applied for both the basement and the foundation—resulting in a more solid base compared to the traditional timber pile foundations. Developer, real estate agent and architect H. van der Schaar was both the client and the designer. He envisioned a distinguished ensemble of stylish townhouses, of which this property forms part. While the façades appear similar at first glance, the houses vary in width. Number 77 is one of the broader properties in the row. Striking features of the façade include the entrance door and bay windows—distinct architectural elements that define the exterior expression. This atmosphere and character have been carried through into the interior and remain clearly recognisable.
Living and cooking
The kitchen forms the central heart of the ground floor. High ceilings with decorative cornices, wide oak herringbone floors and a transparent layout create a sense of light and connection. The kitchen is a Dada design by Vincent van Duysen and was renovated in 2022. It is fully equipped with premium Gaggenau appliances, including a flex-induction hob with integrated extraction, Vario refrigerator and fridge-freezer combination, oven, microwave oven, dishwasher and a Quooker – all seamlessly integrated into the design. The style of the kitchen is characterised by dark walnut wood, a material choice that has been extended into the cabinetry and the bespoke desk in the study and wardrobe space at the front of the house. The combination of the natural stone worktop and the adjoining wooden dining area underscores the refinement of the space. The kitchen serves as the central gathering point of the home. Adjacent to it, and also facing the garden, is a spacious dining room. A fantastically large glass façade connects the kitchen to the garden. The suite-style cabinetry gives the adjoining living room its own sense of intimacy. Steel-framed glass doors provide a visual and physical link to the hallway. At the front, the sitting room features a bay window, fireplace and wooden flooring, offering a warm and intimate atmosphere. Here, the historic soul of the house comes to life in harmony with modern comfort. The ornamental plaster ceiling in the front room has been carefully restored.
Sleeping and bathing
The main bedroom on the first floor features a spacious dressing area and a luxurious bathroom with walk-in shower, a free standing bathtub, double vanity and toilet. The principal suite offers the comfort and elegance of a boutique hotel. Quietly situated at the rear, facing south, the bathroom exudes a sense of understated and timeless luxury. It is finished with Piet Boon tiles (Douglas & Jones), a Cocoon bathtub, bespoke bathroom furniture in Consentino-Silestone, and stainless steel Hotbath fixtures. The walk-in wardrobe offers more than ten linear metres of custom cabinetry. The rooms are connected via a generous and light-filled landing, where the staircase rising from below adds a sense of grandeur. At the front of the house, two generously sized bedrooms are linked through an en-suite connection. This floor also includes a second bathroom and a separate toilet. The second bathroom is likewise finished with Piet Boon tiles (Douglas & Jones), a bespoke vanity in Consentino-Silestone and stainless steel Hotbath taps—fully in line with the refined style and high-quality detailing of the main bathroom. The second floor offers a multifunctional space with a ridge height of over five metres, a guest room, a third bathroom on the mezzanine level, a kitchenette and a separate toilet. This level is ideally suited for guests, working from home, exercising or unwinding. The stairs to the basement open into a spacious hall with fitted wardrobes, and gives access to a multifunctional room with daylight and fixed wardrobe space, perfect as a study, studio or guest room. On the other side of the hall is the technical area, a bathroom with walk-in shower and toilet. At the rear, a second space is located – ideal as a laundry space, hobby room, storage or wine cellar. The basement would be a suitable apartment for an aupair.
Garden and roof terrace
The garden is south-facing and directly connected to both the kitchen and the dining room. The garden is framed by lush greenery and open towards the west, allowing for exceptional natural light. The garden has been restyled in 2022 with trees, perennials, irrigation system and cosy lighting. Throughout the day it is a light and sunny garden, also providing for shaded spots. At the second floor, a generous and sheltered roof terrace of approximately 50 square metres is also facing south. This outdoor space offers abundant sunlight, tranquility and privacy—an exceptional quality in the heart of the city.

What the residents will miss
What makes this house so special to us? The beautiful light, the generous staircase, and the sense of calm that takes over as soon as you step inside. Despite the central location, being in the garden or on the roof terrace feels like a serene escape from the city. There is no single favourite spot in the house — it truly depends on the moment of the day. Morning coffee at the kitchen island, drinks at the dining table, a sunny afternoon in the garden. On warm evenings: barbecues on the roof terrace. Every space is one to linger in. The neighbourhood also holds something unique. Everything is nearby. We walk or cycle to the Concertgebouw, the Vondelpark or one of the museums. For a spontaneous night out, Restaurant Schotsheuvel is our go-to — we just walk in, no reservation needed. What will we miss most? The scent of fresh bread from Van Vessem in the morning, and the luxury of a gym just a few steps away. But above all, the rhythm this house gave us — a beautiful balance between city life and peace, between vibrancy and ease.
