Neighbourhood Guide
De Pijp was developed in the late 19th century to accommodate workers moving to the city in search of employment. In 1886, the father of Freddy Heineken opened the Heineken Brewery here. The first workers' homes, built around the Albert Cuypstraat, were constructed quickly and affordably. Later developments, moving towards the Diamantbuurt, saw the addition of houses in the Amsterdam School style, designed by Berlage. The area is said to owe its name to its long, straight streets resembling a pipe (“pijp” in Dutch). Today, the Albert Cuyp Market and Sarphatipark remain central to the energy of De Pijp. Over the years, the neighbourhood became home to artists and writers such as Piet Mondrian, Carel Willink, and Gerard Reve. This diverse and vibrant community brought with it a lively mix of cafés and eateries. De Pijp is now often referred to as Amsterdam’s Quartier Latin, known for its bustling vibe and culinary hotspots like Brut de Mer, Yamazato, Arles, the Peruvian NAZKA, and authentic bistros such as Petit Caron.

‘t Sloterhuys
As an agency, we handle the sale of a varied selection of properties. Personally, I really enjoy spending time in the Hoofddorpplein area — whether it’s for everyday groceries or something special, like a visit to butcher Van der Laan. On the Sloterkade itself, as well as on streets like the Zeilstraat and Hoofddorpplein, you’ll find a wide range of shops, specialty stores, and delicatessens. The neighbourhood also offers several great restaurants and cosy cafés. The property at Sloterkade 95, which we are proud to offer for sale, is versatile and diverse in many ways. The layout of the two apartment rights has been optimized into two highly functional homes. There’s also the option to combine both units into one spacious family home in a truly unique location along the Kostverlorenvaart canal. At the front of the property, you experience the vibrant city feel, while at the rear you can enjoy peace and quiet in the garden or on the balcony. If you’re interested, I’d be happy to invite you for a viewing. I’ll gladly tell you more about the apartment in person. Hope to see you soon!

Originally, the plan in the early 1900s was to construct a residential block consisting of five identical buildings. In the end, only two were built: Sloterkade 94 and 95. These two adjoining houses were constructed in a traditional Amsterdam style, with influences from the Dutch Neo-Renaissance and elements of 1930s architecture. This is reflected in several characteristic features:
– Symmetry: The façades are symmetrically designed, typical of traditional Dutch townhouses.
– Brick façade: The red brickwork is a classic feature of Amsterdam architectural styles.
– White-painted window frames and cornices: These contrast beautifully with the brick and are characteristic of the Neo-Renaissance style.
– Small balconies with wooden railings: These are reminiscent of the 1930s, when such decorative details were in vogue.
– Classic window layout with muntins: This gives the homes a historic look that ties in with older Dutch architectural traditions.
In 1974, the property at Sloterkade 95 was renovated under the supervision of ir. F.J.E. Dekeukeleire, although little additional information about this architect is available.
The apartment is accessible via its own entrance from the street. The truly unique living area, with a width of nearly 6.80 meters, is located on the first floor. The spacious open-plan kitchen with an island is situated at the front, offering stunning views of the Kostverlorenvaart. The French doors leading to the balcony create a lovely connection to the water. The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, where you can enjoy a delightful dinner with a beautiful view. The kitchen is equipped with various built-in appliances, such as a 5-burner gas stove, extractor hood, oven, fridge/freezer, and dishwasher. The living room is located at the rear and offers ample space for a large sectional sofa. Additionally, the balcony is accessible via two sets of French doors. Adjacent to the living room is a multifunctional room that can serve as an office or playroom. This room also provides access to the balcony. In the hallway, there is a separate guest toilet with a hand basin.
On the second floor, you will find all the sleeping areas. The landing provides access to the bedrooms, bathroom, and laundry room. At the front of the apartment are two smaller bedrooms/children’s rooms. At the rear is the master bedroom, which also features an open wardrobe wall with compartments. The master bedroom offers ample space for a full-sized double bed and a wardrobe wall. The bathroom has a sleek, modern design and is equipped with a bathtub, walk-in shower, double sink, and an additional toilet.
The balcony, adjacent to the living room, can be described as a high-quality outdoor space due to its sunny west-facing position and a width of over 6.5 meters. On the balcony, you can enjoy the sunset in a peaceful oasis.
The area was developed in the 1920s as part of Plan West, a city expansion project by the former municipality of Sloten. The street names in the neighbourhood are inspired by 19th-century painters and towns located southwest of Amsterdam. Hoofddorppleinbuurt is part of the Amsterdam Zuid district and offers plenty of options for those who enjoy shopping and good food. Wen concept store on Hoofddorpweg is a great spot for unique gifts and stylish accessories. The area also boasts a variety of cosy cafés and popular restaurants such as Gent aan de Schinkel, Oslo, Café Maurits, and Nana’s Coffee on Hoofddorpplein. There are excellent facilities for sports and relaxation nearby as well. David Lloyd offers a fully equipped gym, and several yoga studios are within walking distance. This location strikes the perfect balance between stylish residential living and the energy of the city, making it an ideal place to live and enjoy all that Amsterdam has to offer. The neighbourhood features plenty of playgrounds for children, and the iconic Vondelpark is just around the corner — ideal for a walk, run or outdoor workout. Additionally, the nearby canals such as the Westlandgracht and Sloterkade offer opportunities to moor a small boat — perfect for a leisurely trip through Amsterdam’s waterways. Living in Hoofddorppleinbuurt provides a village-like atmosphere while still being close to the vibrant areas of Zuid, the Zuidas, and West. It’s now a lively and well-loved neighbourhood that offers a great mix of peace, greenery, and urban amenities.
