“When we purchased this apartment, we were completely captivated by the historical charm of the former SIGMA paint factory where it is located. Many authentic elements have been preserved, such as the beam structure and high ceilings.”

De Verffabriek
A historic location with a vibrant blend of residential and working spaces. Once home to Amsterdam’s harbors and industry, it has now transformed into a bustling urban district with remarkable architecture. Thanks to its origins as a harbor, the area is rich in waterways, offering plenty of opportunities for activities on and around the water.
The apartment is situated in the former SIGMA paint factory, where industrial character has been seamlessly combined with modern living. The numerous large windows fill the apartment with abundant natural light, while the open layout and high ceilings give it the charm of a loft.

In the curve leading to the Cruquius area, five new residential buildings have been constructed around two existing structures. The Sigma factory building, the largest historic structure in the vicinity, has been preserved to keep the area’s industrial history visible during its transformation. Heritage preservation authorities advocated for a dominant position of the main building, ensuring it remained the most prominent volume upon entering Cruquius. Additionally, the original lacquer distillery behind the factory has been retained due to its significance in shaping the scale and atmosphere of the area. The result is a cohesive ensemble where the industrial architecture of the factory has influenced the surrounding buildings.
What the owners will miss
We moved to Cruquiuseiland because it is close to the city center of Amsterdam, but it also feels like a vibrant island where people know each other. The residents are a wonderful mix of young and old: students, expats, and people with and without children. The island itself offers a great combination of industrial buildings, modern architecture, restaurants (such as Contessa and Papa Aswa), cafés (like brewery Krux and CanCanteen), a lovely bakery (Millie Vanillie), and an Albert Heijn just around the corner. Soon, there will be a bridge connecting to Flevopark, where we enjoy tennis and swimming. In summer, you can also swim and sunbathe at the swimming pier on Zeeburgerkade. Additionally, we were captivated by the historical charm of the former SIGMA paint factory, where our apartment is located. Many authentic elements have been preserved, such as the beam structure and high ceilings. We have carefully and lovingly designed the apartment’s interior and finished it with high-quality materials. We enjoy the loft-like atmosphere, the single-level living, and the shared garden. The views of the water and the terrace and park of the restaurants across from our building add to its charm. We will undoubtedly miss the ambiance and experience of our home, as well as the good times with friends and neighbors: at our kitchen table, outside in the sun behind our house, or at brewery Krux. Soon, we will be returning to our roots in Drenthe. We want to live closer to our parents (to help with caregiving) and enjoy the natural surroundings where we grew up. We plan to furnish another historic home there. At the same time, we will deeply miss the vibe of Amsterdam, Cruquiuseiland, and our wonderful home…
