Vondelstraat 42-A is part of a stately municipal monument dating from 1867, designed by Pierre Cuypers—the architect behind the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station, among other buildings. His influence is evident in the refined details: the tall facade openings, the elegant natural stone ornaments, and the meticulous brickwork with its characteristic red and yellow brick layers.
Behind the historic façade lies a surprisingly light ground floor apartment with an open and contemporary layout. Cuypers' architecture provides a powerful framework, but inside, the focus is on tranquility, clarity, and connection with nature. Large windows on the garden side allow daylight to play a leading role, while the high ceiling in the living area provides airiness and openness.
The home feels like a contemporary interpretation of classic living. Authentic structures and contemporary simplicity reinforce each other. The layout is logical and relaxed, with sightlines to the outside throughout. The home reads like a layered story — with Cuypers as the foundation and greenery as the finale.

In the midst of the dynamic city of Amsterdam, we experienced living in this lovely house on Vondelstraat as a unique place of greenery and tranquility.
With the museums around the corner in the museum quarter, we found plenty of inspiration for our creative profession here. We also enjoyed wonderful theater and classical concerts in the Concertgebouw and the Stadsschouwburg, both within walking distance. We remember the spontaneous dinners with fellow residents in the large VVE garden, which were cozy and lasted into the late hours. A jog or an evening walk were part of our daily routine, as was a cup of coffee at the blue tea house in the Vondelpark. When the children were small, we would take a blanket there for a picnic. We played soccer on the Museumplein and skated on the ice rink in the winter. The coronavirus period was not a punishment for us because we had a large garden and could still go outside and take a walk in our mini park in the middle of the city.
Now that our sons have flown the nest, we hope that the house will be an inspiring and pleasant place for the new residents. When you descend the stairs, you will be surprised by the abundance of light provided by the large windows and by the large green city garden.
We will also miss chatting with the butcher, the fishmonger, and the Primera in Constantijn Huijgenstraat, all of whom have seen the children in their buggies. It's like a small village.
Above all, we cherish the cozy dinners with many friends at the long table in this particularly green spot, where you can hear the birds singing cheerfully, an oasis of peace in the middle of Amsterdam.
