The white building from 1905, located on Tweede Schinkelstraat, is a beautiful example of the transitional style between neoclassical and eclectic architecture. The symmetrical façade is characterized by tall, segmental arched windows, which give it a stately and elegant appearance. The ornate details, such as the brickwork around the windows and the decorative corbels under the eaves, reinforce the refined character of the building. Six years ago, I was looking for a new house, but I couldn't find the right one. Until my sister, who moved to Haarlem with her family, asked if I was interested in her house. A house I already knew well from my many visits to my sister and my nephew and niece. The idea that her children could still come back often to the house where they partly grew up made the choice even more special.
What makes this home special to me are the spacious, open areas and high ceilings. It creates an unparalleled "wow effect"—as if you are living in a ground-floor loft. This is something I have often heard from friends and acquaintances. Even requests for photo shoots in front of the large doors or inside the house were no exception.
For me, everything revolves around the kitchen. The kitchen unit is the heart of the home. This is where I have breakfast with the newspaper, have drinks with friends, or enjoy dinner in the evening. The custom-made bookcase enhances the atmosphere and makes the kitchen the most inviting place in the house.
What I will definitely miss is the neighborhood. The residents are friendly and greet each other on the street, which contributes to the cozy atmosphere. In addition, there are countless restaurants and cafés within walking distance. My favorite restaurants were Simply Fish and Parallel on Overtoom. For a drink, I liked to go to Van Mechelen, Bonny's, or Café Hans. In terms of takeaway options, the sushi from my neighbors at Dragon I is highly recommended, and the Indonesian toko Kokita is a household name in the neighborhood. As a local resident, you can easily avoid the daily queues.
What I will miss most are the weekends. Mornings start with coffee from the neighborhood, followed by grocery shopping, and then in the afternoon, friends spontaneously drop by to kick off the evening around the kitchen island. It is a house that invites you to get together and enjoy yourself.
